View Full Version : Scallops for Striper chunkin
Anyone ever try using scallops in the surf for Striper chunkin? I read somewhere that decades ago Jersey fisherman used them with success. I bought some raw ones for dinner at Sam's Club last year, and they smelled like bait, and I was going to use them for fishing. Forgot to, and ended up throwing em out. But the price is right, they seemed like they would hold onto the hook okay, maybe with some thread for good measure....

pretend I am a striper and you can feed me them all day long. But just add some garlic butter to the mix and I will be in hog heaven :D

I would think that the average scallop would be hard to keep on a hook due to their striated texture. Ever notice how the stringy muscle fibers run perpendicular to the flat round faces? They might seem pretty substantial, but in fact, due to this characteristic, raw scallops are pretty fragile. Salting might help, but it also might make any cracks or separations in the meat even more susceptible to falling apart. Couldn't hurt to give it a shot though, especially if you came across some that were a bit past their prime, culinarily speaking.

Eat the scallop itself! Use the lips & guts for the striper! That way you'll have your favorite part and the fish will have his. ;) ;)

If someone wants to buy me scallops, I'll catch them a striper. :) I've never heard of someone using scallops for bass.
