No, I didnt' see that. Scott's is right up the street from me, so I'll have to go talk to Roy to see if it's for real (meaning really from tuesday)! I hope it is!

Red, I didn't hear anything either. Usually word of a catch like that this early would have spread quick. Let us know what's up. There's an article in APP with this pic.

article"
Dick Manners of Yardville caught this 17.9-pound, 36-inch striped bass on a plastic shad in the Point Pleasant Canal on Tuesday, the first day of striper fishing in bays and rivers.
Dick Manners of Yardville caught the first striped bass of the season Tuesday, and stopped at Capt. Bill's with the 17.9-pound, 36-inch fish. He also caught three other bass ? all in the backwaters of Ocean County.

SOMETHING IS FISHY.

Can I ask why it would be so surprising to see this fish caught this early on a sassy? Regardless of the details on this particular fish, where it was caught, I'm confused as to why anyone would think it impossible. It is not as if these fish are back from somewhere and they do feed in winter.

I'm interested in who thinks it highly unlikely to catch that size fish on a sassy this time of year and why you think so? Also, those of you who have had experience catching fish this way so early, feel free to say why you think it is not impossible at all.

Mike,

I'm around, always reading ... just don't fish like I used too. Last two years I've been limited to spring tiderunners and tog, trips to Virginia, and fall chunking trips.

However, I will say, back in the fall I began to get this itch and the itch has just grown more intense as spring has drew closer ... it is an itch that I may just begin scratching at with some force in the coming days ... :D

Those fish are there right now as we speak. They just don't bite non-stop and you have to find bait and warm water as Skip said. I'm not sure of the average water temp right now but these fish are around.

You spent too many years offshore commercial fishing  If you were smart enough you would have checked the properties of the picture and followed it back to the source. Simple computing. You will find it was taken directly for the Asbury Park Press site.

You will never see a photoshopped picture from me. I have a life. :D tongue.gif

Ardmore Bill, I think it is absolutely possible. A few years back,(don't remember when, as I don't keep a log) I was in or close to double digets picking fish one per outing on rubber, through the month of march. First ten or eleven fish of the year were all over 30", all on rubber.

March is one of my favorite months. Plenty of fish...And not a ton of people yet! Alot of people are don't think that "stripers" start bitting till April for some reason!

Everyone, the stripers don't start bitting till April! :D

Except for on the STALKER ofcourse ;) :D

I know Dick, well, and last year he also caught the first few bass of the year and weighed in at the same place as this one. Last year those fish were caught by the power plant south of Trenton.I live 4 miles from the canal and would bet a limb that no bass have been caught in the Pt. Pleasant Canal yet.......

AFEW50S

Incidentally, the Pt Pleasant Canal was absolutely loaded with stripers in the 15 to 25 lb range all of October last fall, when they were no where else around here.

AFEW - I heard that too, that guys were doing very well back there in November while I was fishing out front - my point exactly, that these fish are in there over winter and given the big comeback of winter run browns, which guys are really targeting in the squan in February (and correct me if I'm wrong but connects the squan to barnaget bay), in addition to the interest in stripers in those parts - it is just not surprising to me that stripers will be caught. The powerplant does have an edge over all other areas due to the higher water temps in the discharge water, but stripers will be stripers and be spread all over the place.

We are just about to start here around philly, and my firsts will be on fin-s or sassys, caught in amonst the walleye. I'm not defending the picture that started this thread, just the premise that it happens with some frequency.

Jack does'nt Scotts have a Reward for the first bass of the season? It may be a different Scotts but that would explain it,even if the Guy caught it in the Big D it would be worth the trip.HRL

I have caught stripers on Sassy Shads in the backwaters earlier than this.

Biggest - I think those rewards on the first fish bring out the worst in many fishing for stripers. The gang I fish with chuckle over these kinds of things, because we could easily clean up on these rewards if we wanted to, expecially when you put a price on a basses head and say the fish can come from anywhere. Thankfully, none of us are interested in this sort of thing - but no doubt that is why that fish is making its way around. I don't doubt that this kind of thing goes on, that the same fish has hit multiple b&t shops in an attempt to clean up the reward money. A certain amount of this is also braggin rights. There are a lot of different types of anglers in the world. There are those that fish for themselves and get intrinsic satisfaction out of it, having no need to tell others of their successes and then there are those that live to tell everyone else about their successes.

bill you are probably right.i was thinking if you weigh it in at your tackle shop you should take the picture there.
