i live on the tidel section of the delaware river south of trenton and was thinking of building about a 5' round herring pen. but i was not sure if it was legal and if they would stay alive for any period of time. because they would be fighting the current all day long. but it would be nice to stock up and fish for stripers right out my back door and not have to motor up to trenton for bait all the time. maybe even have some for off shore in the summer. anyone with experance?:)

Your biggest problem is current, they will become weak and die.If you deflect the current on bothsides you got a shot.On the amount you
can keep refer to the book.(35)

The easiest pen I have ever seen was to use a very large plastic trash can. Its already round. Drill it full of holes. Use bungy to tie down the lid. Tie it good to the dock through the handle AND through some of the holes you drill.
Cheap. Fast. Good.

Do what Herb does at his tackle shop. Buy one of those plastic swimming pools and put it in your backyard. Just get a small sump pump and place it in the pool with a hose comming off of it pushing the water like a whirl pool. Works pretty good for him. You'll still have a few casualties but it works well

Make sure you use well water and keep in shaded area. Add fresh water regulary to keep ammonia levels & temp down. Also be careful of drastic temp change when adding fresh water.

A couple of years ago we had our boat docked at Curtains Marina just for the striper run. We built a round 5' live pen for the herring and chained it to the dock. The longest we could keep the herring alive was just a couple of days. Good Luck!

I really don't know about keeping them alive or if its legal and whatever but in this months SaltWater Sportsman they give you a step by step description on how to make a 4' oval plastic bait pen. Its pretty easy and is pretty much the same pen I built a few years ago. Its durable and holds mullet, spot and p-nuts well.

thanks guys, i think iam gonna go with the pool idea. i just have to figure out how iam gonna get the pump to draw good water because at low tide it is land at my sea wall iam gonna have to run a cord and hose and hang it off my dock so it is all ways drawing fresh water and not mud. iam gonna have to get a good pump to push about 10' up and about 35' horizonaly.

Just want to remind you that should your pen or pool be.... visible... that you are still only permitted one day's limit of 35 herring at a time....

I have a new herring pen from Absecon Dave's. It is 4' by 2' with rounded corners, etc. If you want it, let me know. Actually, I have the whole set-up for catching and storing live herring ( the holding tank, aerator, battery, etc.). I have done very well at the spillway in Mays, the railraod bridge and 11th ave over the past several years, but now have given up on the live bait fishing.
