I had some fresh HERRING dropped off this morning out of the Mullica River and I managed to get a few Live HERRING on my own this afternoon so I've got them in the tanks and they should be available to catch on this new moon if the weather doesn't completely fall apart.

Great news, this storm screwed up my chances of giving them a shot this weekend though.

Dave, or anyone, is it possible to keep herring in an aquarium? I have an old 50 gallon with a power head and undergravel filter. i can filter water i can get from the bay. Anyone ever do this?

I don't think so, it has to be round so they don't get caught in a corner.
They are swimmers and they are continuously moving.

Sweet lure. Do you need a fresh water license to catch the herring in the back bays, tidal waters?

You don't need a licence in "tidal waters", borders are listed in the NJFG book.

Prowler, HERRING do like their space, but they do learn their surroundings. If you go to the old aquariam inches of fish in the tank you probably can keep a few in there, but probably even less than less active species. 5 would probably be a lot.

Lisence regulations are the same as any fish. As stated in the other HERRING post in the Homeport forum you DO NOT need a lisence to use a dip net or cast net for HERRING in fresh water. But I don't elaborate on this becasue it is confusing and you cannot have a fishing rod any where near you while netting fish, and I like to always have the option to catch anything that might open it's mouth for a hook.
