Well bad news and good news. The waters along side the camground are looking better and better for bass. The bad news is all the cabins are rented which leaves the camground next to them as the onlly alternatives. We have plenty of good tents and camping gear so no big problem if anybody wants to come. April 11th to 15th for camping...april 12th to 16th for fishing. I was gonna bring a portable live well since the campsites are right on the water.

Looking for fishfinder suggestion for the yak?
Duel beam transducer?
through the hull transducer?

I was looking at the Garmin160C and the lowrance M67C but would like your opinions. I already have a Garmin GPSMAP 60csx.

I was looking at the Garmin160C and the lowrance M67C but would like your opinions. I already have a Garmin GPSMAP 60csx.

I think the two most important things in a FF are getting the widest beam possible and waterproofness. That said I settled on a Humminbird PriahnaMax 20. Thru hull transducer. I glue mine down with Marine Goop (or Lexel). You can power it with anything from 8AA batteries. (battery holder at Radio Shack for $2.) up to expensive rechargables.

For my outback I just run the power and transducer cords over the gasket in the front hatch. Does not seem to let any water in. I run the hatch bungie through my FF mount. That's a good way to start anyway cause there's no drilling till you decide if you want to mount it somewhere else.

How you use the FF depends on where and when you fish. Around South Jersey the guys that fish mostly at night, (the guys who catch the most fish!!!) fish mostly bridges and pilings so they can see the structure and the fish right in front of them. They don't use a FF.

That only works if you have Doris Day on board.

I made a bracket for the transducer out of PVC that hangs over the side.

BAYSTALKER, I have some of the scottys mounting brackets coming in before your yak. Its the same base that holds the light or the rod holder so you can move things around. Rememeber you wont be paddling so you can mount things in front of you on the gunnels and they wont interfere with the foot drive.

What are your suggestions on a FF

Vince Ive been using an Eagle Cuda 240 for awhile now...its been nothing but good to me. GPS built right in too...As been said before its not needed at all for flipping plastics around the bridges at night...I leave mine at home if thats what I'll be doing... Does come in handy for fluking and I love it in bigger water like in inlets and especially for finding bait and marks outfront. Just take some plugs, jigs and a rod with you for awhile..see what you really need and where you'll need it. Have fun, be safe with it and enjoy the simplicity.

Vince, I use a Vexilar lc110 which is a portable unit that runs on 8 aa's. This model is no longer made. I permantly installed Hummingbirds years ago and noticed that the wiring and brackets got pretty beat up from being in the boat all the time. I also noticed I only used a fishfinder when in open or new water so I went to a portable unit. When I dont need it it sits nice and dry at home along with all but the transducer wiring. I would recomend you use theyak a few times before drilling and mounting the ff. That way you will know excactly where you want it before drilling holes.

Fishpix will not accept them unless they are resized already. Also anything you took off the internet will already be a small file.

What are your opinions of a roof rack? I have a 97 Jeep Cherokee and will need a rack. The truck has the factory roof rack now. I have the hobie outback

What do you think of this Thule one, I am trying not to break the bank

My thoughts would be that you go over to Kenwood's house. He has an outback and an Jeep Cherokee with a rack. Try to lift that sucker onto the top.

Years ago after dropping my Chessy 17 onto my back with the resulting 20 stitches  I said, "never again" and got a pickup.

Edit: Added thoughts. On my old Surbaban I just u-bolted 2x4s on covered them with carpet. Ya don't need any thing fancy. Also unless you buy custom shaped bars you will be mounting the yak upside down, so you dont want anything sticking off the gunnells. Like ram mounts.

What are your opinions of a roof rack? I have a 97 Jeep Cherokee and will need a rack. The truck has the factory roof rack now. I have the hobie outback

What do you think of this Thule one, I am trying not to break the bank
http://www.thuleracks.com/thule/product.asp?dept_id=28&sku=883
bs, The thule or the yakima racks that I carry both are good qaulty. You will probably be just fine using the factory racks and a cheap pair of tie downs with buckles not hooks. The real old cherokees had a flimsy bar with a shiny metal strip on top. They were crap but since then all suv's have pretty solid bars. You will find the outback a bitch to load yourself on top. Plus you have to remove everything off of it. If at all possible I would fold the seats down and jusat hang it out the back with a strap or rope. This is like a pickup and it allows you to leave the yak rigged with all your gear always atached and ready to go and you can simple wheel the yak over to the vehicle and slide it right in with no lifting.

Bay Stalker my cell is 410-446-8647. I have the livewell cd from Librarian if you want it.. I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee that I am going to put my outback on also. Right now I use the company truck (and their gas) I just strap it down to the racks. Because the yak is curved slightly on the bottom I made a spacer board for one end of the rack so when I strap it down it does not bend when I pull tight on the tie downs.

paz, What do you wheigh and how tall are you. In south jersey we are blessed with 100's of launching spots close by to good fishing. Since speed and distance is not important you can get a yak that is a little slower but drier, more stable and with more storage capability. This is ususaly obtained by going wider than a fast yak which tends to be narrow and wet. At all the spots I fish I can see where ill be fishing while unloading the yak from the truck.

Barrell, you might recall you rigged up my yak for fishing last year. I was new to yak fishing, and keep the boat at a buddies place in Brigantine. Since I never left the island with it, I generally would load her up inside my Toyota 4runner with one end hanging out the back to get to the local launch points. (kinda like you describe). Just one word of caution to anyone who does this. One day I had the front end of the yak a bit too close to the inside windshield. Although the yak was secured well, at one point I must have hit a bump just enough for the tip of the yak to bounce and it put a good size crack in the windshield. I actually didn't even notice it until I loaded the yak back in the truck after a morning of fishing.

When I got the windshield replaced, no lie the guy told me it was not the first time he replaced one that was cracked by a yak or canoe in the same way. Pointing this out just so nobody else makes the same mistake I did. I could have bought two Thule racks for the price it cost me to fix that! :p

On a happier note, I think I need to come see you to buy a new Hobie. Was really considering buying a new boat - one with a motor - this spring, but kinda decided to hold off most likely for another year. Since I haven't satisfied that desire, I definitely need to go ahead and get a new yak, and it's gotta be a Hobie. My son enjoyed the yaking last year too, so this way we can get out together. With that said, I'm going to need two carriers. I'm thinking two pair of the Thule Hull-a-port 835 XT's. Do you think these will be a good choice for carrying two yaks?

Like I said I need to get over to see you. :D

barrell
03-26-2007, 11:12 PM
I dont know alot about Thule as I am a yakima dealer. You will need a minimum of a 66 inch bar to lay to yaks flat.

LongDrive
03-26-2007, 11:30 PM
Barrell, the hull-a-port is a "J" cradle so the yak fits in the cradle on on it's side. What do you think of this set-up and does Yakima make something similar?

barrell
03-26-2007, 11:58 PM
Yeah they do but I have watched many people struggle getting the yaks in the cradles and strapped when the vehicle is tall. Its a lot easier and cheaper to just put a long bar on and lay em flat. Its not a problem on most suvs because the overhang of the bar is above your head and a 66 inch doesnt have much overhang. Now a 78 inch sticks way out beyond the sides of the vehicle.

The lighter and shorter you are the more choices you have. At your height and wheight you could drop down to a 10 foot yak. Something that short is light and easy to load and carry. If you can afford one the Hobie sport is foot propelled. Hobies are what everybody is either switching to or saving up to make the switch to. If you have a smaller budget look at the shorter Cobras, tarpons etc. Make sure you try it out first. You dont want to be sitting in a puddle of water. And if you buy dont skrimp on the seat and paddle. Get maybe not the most expensive but dont buy the cheapest either. Take your time drilling holes and rigging it. Use it a few times before deciding hwere and what to mount on it. I have a lot of different yaks if you are ever in Brigantine your welcome to try some different ones out.

Went to the usual area in the DB off Villas for the first 2 hours of the outgoing tide. 19' of water, 49F at the start of the tide. Clams for bait. Constant action but everyting was 18" to 25". Brought 15 fish to the side of the yak. Left with the fish still biting and the water temp was up to 51F. It's great fun catching these small fish. Looks like the weather will severly limit fishing for the next several days. Perhaps some bigger fish will show up by the time fishable conditions return.

Well I got my yak and now I need to install the FF and power for it.

I used a watertight box to enclose the battery and stabilized it in the box with closed cell foam. The battery box is mounted to the sail mast as shown. It slid back enough that it would not impede the storage area. The one hole I drilled in the box is sealed with silicone inside and out, this was to get the power cable into it. The wire is held tight to the box with one plastic wire strap. I also added quick disconnects for the charger, this way I don't have to remove the battery to charge it. The transducer it set into a block of closed cell foam that is glued down to the hull behind the sail post. Before setting the foam I lightly sanded the area and wiped it clean with alcohol. I sprayed the one side of the foam with 3M super 77 spray adhesive. I set it on to the hull after it tacked up and weighted it down. This area looked like it would have the least flex and not pop the transducer from the hull as others stated. The transducer was then set into a bed of clear silicone not marine goop, this way it could still be removed.

This may help.

Well I decided that $30. was a little much for a flag and decided to make one. I had a broken VHF antenna lying around and thought this looked like a perfect flag mount. I cut it down to 4' and cut out the end to fit in a Scotty flush mount rod holder. This holder also is used for my light when fishing at night. I then install a top, I used a small but cap I had for making rods. For the flag I used was made from an old cheep PFD. I drilled two small holes in the pole and through wired loops with SS wire that I use for plug making. I then used large split rings to attach the flag to it. I am waiting on some 3M tape and will add some to the flag and the yak.

Vince - congrats on the Hobie

I used the Hummingbird Pirahna Max Portable DF with transducer suction mount, no problems

As rack, on my 4Runner, Yakima Hully rollers on the rear bar (yak is heavy), Shark pads on the front bar. The hully rollers help getting the bow up an then its a push forward. Barrel sells an addtional set of wheels that mounts tempoaray on the rear window to help single handeled loading. For short trips, the yak goes in the back thru the tailgate like Longdrive stated.

For the rich, Yakima makes the sideloader rack that comes down on pistons. You load the yak on the cradle at mid-door level then lift the whole thing up onto the roof.

Livewell for Hobie Ourback, see that other site from North Jersey full of "stuff", click on articles page. 5 gal livewell.

I'm doing the replacement front hatch thing like Libarian has done according to Barrel (see "stuff" site, articles) and section off compartments with foam.

eric, You can now get the rectangular hatches with a nylon bag liner and they are cheap. Its a big improvement over just the hatch that just created a hole into the yak. I still wish someone would market a solid liner with a snap on lid for the large rectangular style hatches. Kinda like a big tupperware. The new hobies have small tackle box liners with a lid that snap on and then they drop inside the round hatches.

I mostly fish off the Villas in a 12ft tin boat with a 4 hp but also have a yak, maybe we can hook up later this summer.Have seen another yakker from the Villas post here also although I'm not sure of the name,"Drydock" might be the name.

Mohawk---I'll be too busy with work to do any fishing until June or so but I'll give you a shout on here then.I did reserve a couple open boat trips on the Stalker before then though to try for some drumfish, don't usually catch them in too close.

Villasbill & Villasyak I will be fishing the bay soon. I also go out of the Villas, last year was my first season and had alot of fun. I fish anywhere from the Northern part of Villas down to the sunken ship at Cape May Point. I will be out as soon as it gets a little warmer. Let me know if you want to go.

Villasbill & Drydock, I would be happy to hook up with either of you when you begin fishing. I haven't been able to go since last Tuesday, due to other commitments or the weather and the weather doesn't look very promising through Monday.

I've had my best success with stripers when I find ~19ft of water (at high tide) and I haven't had to stray too far north or south from Birch Rd area. That's not quite as far out as the 20' slough.

Villasbill, when I go to the sunken ship I will put my kayak in at the end of Ferry Road, right before the road to the canal. I have a Hobie adventure with peddles. I usually troll down to the sunken ship and then fish around the ship. I've picked up a few bluefish trolling and some nice stripers fishing the bottom around the ship. I put my kayak in most of the time off of Walnut Ave not far from Birch. I'd like to try a few new spots up toward Del Haven, there are some small creeks that come off the bay. These might be good spots when the tide begins to head out and the warmer water is going out into the bay.

Drydock-that sounds like a nice trip from the canal inlet to Sunset beach and back. I launch at New York or NJ ave. Keep my tin boat on the beach at a friend's bayfront house,I'm about a block away from the bay on NJ.

Skipbytes and I go tortured for two days by lighteneing on thursday and then wind on friday. Have you ever had all the hair on your head stand straight up just before the bolt strikes the water? Then saturday (today )came with no wind and blue skies. Eelball and bay stalker arived at sunrise. After a steep climb down the hill we launched the yaks.

At first things were slow but a bite started with the tide half way out at about 11am. After all of us trying different lures george found a small yellow/orange plug that quikly got him eight fish including one 30lb + I didnt get a picture of. But heres one of his smaller ones.

I did get a pic of Vinces first big un.

I say first because around 1pm three of us were beat and decided to go back to camp Vince was suposed to follow but decided to give it a few more minutes and nailed 2 more 30lb+ bass on his maidedn voyage.
The day before we had gone up to the northern line of the open zone in the river and skip landed a real nice smallmouth.

Baystalker, awesome job bro. I can't believe you did a marathon on you first trip. My arse, arms and back are a bit sore. But 5+ ours and 10 miles of paddling will do that.
That hill BLOWS!! especially at the end of the day. Thanx barrell and skip for waiting in the morning.

Barrell, Skipbytes, Bay Stalker and Eelball

Sorry I missed you guys. When I got to Kenwood's home on Friday morning he was sicker that a dog. We looked at the forcast and decided to try for a day trip on saturday rather than camp. But Saturday he was still sick so I came down a little late. I tried to call you guys but I could not get a signal on my Tracfone. Launched at the beach in Elk Neck so it was a long paddle to the boats. Tried everything in my arsenal but not hookups. Did not see any boats around me catch anything either. I didn't see any other yaks out there so you might have finished by the time I got there. Looong paddle back. I was one tired old fat man by the time I got back to the beach.

Let me know when you are going again.

Gold, huh!

Out yesterday 4-6 behind NWW, water temp 47 suprisingly clean water. Lots of bait and birds in the shallows just did not seem to be many fish on them. Got 1 short on a small storm shad and a 12" fluke trolling a bucktail. I had not been out for a couple of weeks and the amount of life present was like night and day. Very good to see things stirring again.

Possibly. I have a two-seat Dagger (Bayou 2 model) that I bought a couple years ago. I love it, but it's too big for me and I was thinking of selling it and buying something smaller. It's in perfect condition, and is just sitting in my garage at the moment.

xperksx22 - I mostly fish the NWW area not Wildwood itself but all you need to do is find a place to launch in the back bay and look for creek mouths, channel edges, bridges or any other structure and work those areas. Fishing has been slow for me so far this spring, as Always Fishing said the fish seem more schooled up farther north but they are around. I mostly use artificials, so I have some places in mind to start and normally troll from place to place and when I get to a creek mouth or whatever I will work the area from the bottom up, no luck and I will troll to the next spot. If you are not familiar with the back bay you can always pick up a chart and scout out some spots before you launch. Also if you want to meet up some time shoot me an email and I will show you the little I have learned.

Just came across these saved onto my computer thought I'd share...
These pics are from about 7 years ago or so when I first started yak fishing...I was living in Islamorada at the time and would sit on the banks of one particular cut and listen to the tarpon exploding on the surface but outta reach most of the time and very tough to land from shore when you did hook up. Some of them were SLOBS....My buddy had a couple of touring yaks on his dock and we decided to take them out one night...they werent the perfect fishing yaks but we made them work...this is my very first yak trip and not a bad starter fish...I wish we couldve gotten better pics...The tarpon was in the 30lb class and spun me around and up and down that cut for awhile, it made some awesome leaps right along side the boat(thought it might land IN the boat a couple times)This same night my partner landed a permit in the 30lb class too, absolutly a gorgeous fish. Needless to say after that first night there was no looking back...

Went out yesterday 4-8 behind NWW, finally found some fish schooled up but then I wussed out when the wind really started kicking up and the rain started. I managed 3 shorts up to 23", water temp 53 and pretty clean. I like to think I could have gotten more but who knows. All fish caught trolling a channel edge near a shallow sod bank. They were not picky one on a bucktail with gulp minnow, one on small bass assassin, and one on a bomber. This was my first trip that I found multiple fish in one location, hopefully a good sign for things to come.

shoulder is still a little sore. I just started some new strenghtening techniques last week that should help.

Yup - Big Don and Ryan's a rule.

Now that I'm making my own, I am only keeping Big Don's, RM Smith's, Tattoo's, Hab's and some of the special ones I've collected like Pichney's.

Gonna sell the rest this week so I can buy more shop materials :)

Hey Baystalker,
A kayak question: I noticed your picture with the 07 kayak that looks great. Do you think kayak color is important? I was going to buy a Hobie but was looking at brighter colors (yellow, red) for baoter visibility safety, do you think that adversely affects the fishing?
Thanks, Bob

When Vince came to pick up his orange outback there was problem with it and I had to give him brown. That being said I have been using a brown one for 8 years mostly at night and have never had any problems. The worst case scenario is crossing a large body of water at night with lots of speeding boaters around. A good blast in the eyes from a powerfull flashlight stops em dead in their tracks and teaches em not to drive around that fast at night. I dont beleive they would see a brighter yak any better at the speeds some of them travel at night. We have led anchor lights on a tall mast, reflector tape on all four corners and we wear headlamps.

Bob, if you plan on fishing mostly during the day then I would suggest getting the brightess yak possible. You are not quick in the water and you want to stand out as much as possible...At night its not so much a problem but over the last few years the boat traffic has increased there also, and they run very fast...

I forget where I saw it, but there was a website that compared the visibility of different color kayak from a distance. Yellow was by far the most visible color with the light blue being the worst. I have an OC Caper and picked yellow because of the safetly feature of it.

Out earlier today behind NWW, 2 short bass and 2 blues. All caught during the last of the outgoing, water temp 63. The incoming shut down the bite while the water dropped to 58. Learn the bluefish "death grip"...no it doesnt kill them but it does temporaily "paralyze" them...
Grab them hard on the back of their head, your thumb and pointer finger should be just at where the top of the fishes gill plates meet its head...then squeeze...they wont move. Get your pliers and go to work...release.
For the smaller ones or if I have them hooked with a single hook jig/metal etc...I sometimes use a pig tail dehooker, these work great too and you dont even have to take the fish outta the water. Nice for jigging the weaks too.

Barrell,
You ask if guys that are yak fisherman have lost weight or feel better. I make 3-4 trip to Sea Isle a year, but most of my fishing from the yak is in freshwater. I have at least maintained my target weight and once I get a Hobie this year I hope to drop more weight. But what I find in the mental peace of mind I get by fishing from a yak. It is an unbelievable stress reliever because all I am thinking about is fishing. My power boat collects dust as I would rather be in my kayak. I know my wallet keeps losing weight over the years from all the stuff I buy and once I get Hobie it will really be thin:D

Kenuloza, it always seems you can find a spot to fish even if the wind is blowing hard. If I really want to get out it normally will not stop me but I do a lot more trolling than casting or drifting.

The bass were caught just before and just after the tide turned then it was only blues.

Fished the NJ Angler Tournament today. Fished Sedge Island Wildlife Area for the first time. It's a real nice park, and did more exploring than fishing. It was different than what I am used to. I normally kayak fish in OC area and the creeks off the ICW can be very deep along the sod banks. This area was very flat, and extremly clear. One would think they were flats fishing in Florida. It was difficult finding some deep cuts, but did manage to locate what appeared to be a few nice creeks.
Used almost every soft plastic I have, and did not even get a bite. I thought for sure I would have gotten a blue, and was really hoping for a weakie.
I even anchored in a creek and floated a blood worm...nothing:( .
Oh well, I'll be back out in my familiar territory soon.

Also, I would like to add that this is a great tournament, and I urge you kayak fishermen to enter next years tournament. I do have some issues about what other kayak fishermen in the the tourney consider "kayak fishing." ...but that's another story:eek:

Guys, I have an Ocean Caper. I built a milk crate rod holder. I am a little worried it won't hold if a fish nails it. I plan on going for a ride with my wife this weekend on the bay just south of the dyke in Barnegat Light. Would I be okay If I loosen the drag enough with this setup? My wife and I fished behnd Avalon this morning and did pretty well. We fished jigs on the ebb and caught 6 bass, 6 fluke, 3 blues, and a sea robbin. The bass were all shorts, but 3 of the fluke were keepers. We kept a couple and I had alamost forgotten how good really fresh flounder could be. The gnats were pretty fierce, but there was no wind to contend with and we got out of there around 11:00 am, so the jet skis and go fast boats weren't to bad. Hope to get out again with Kenuloza one night this week. The tide should be about the same.

We landed a couple of flounder, a couple of blues, a sea robbin, and eight stripers ( all shorts). We fished the top of the flood tide and the start of the ebb. Out last night behind NWW 9-1, no wind, no bugs, not much action. Got a short bass and a small blue. Both on a teaser. Heard fish popping everywhere but could not get a bite. I also lost 3 on a bomber, had them on and the hook just seemed to pull, not sure why but this has been happening more often lately. All fish and bites were during a pause in the retreive as the bomber come back to the top. It seemed that the fish that did hit were only interested in a stopped or very slowly moving lure. I was thinking that things may have switched over to summer bite verses the very aggressive (faster retreive)spring bite, or maybe just an off night. Any thoughts?

Put a pretty good hurting on the Brigantine flounder population the last couple days - man I love this yak fishing! :) Once again just missed the slam yesterday as I had many fluke, a nice weakfish, and a blue or two. I actually had one hit that almost yanked the rod out of my hands. I am certain it wasn't a blue, most likely a big weakie or maybe even a bass. Could've been the slam! Gulp baits again the ticket. This is my favorite time of year to fish - so many possibilities. It's also a great time to hit the beach for a chance at a real slob. Good luck everybody.

BTW, all fish were on the drop - mostly the last two hours. I know there are a lot of guys out there that really target fluke the last two hours of incoming. They definitely can be had on a good dropping tide.

You may want to change the hooks on those bombers. The stock trebles are crap and I always switch to VMC's. However, last fall for a solid week I was getting bumps on my bombers with no hook ups. What was equally as strange was reading reports about guys experiencing the same thing- during the same week! Just another mystery to solve... :)

Fished behind Ocean City last night. Pretty breezy, but fishable. Just before dark, fog was moving in semi thick, so I quit a little earlier than I wanted. Caught 3 throwback fluke on gulp shrimp and bucktail. Also lost a good fish on a jig, when a knot failed. I tie good knots, but I changed to a lighter jig head in a hurry and the wind was blowing and the dog was eating my homework. I should be beyond rookie errors. Also, one of the flounder had a tag (American Littoral Society) through the back in front of it's tail. THe fish was small, maybe 10-12 inches and I couldn't read the info on the tag very well without my glasses. Also I didn't have any way to record the number. I thought that the info that the society would derive would be better if the fish were captured later in it's life cycle, so I didn't remove the tag. Wished I could have written down the info to send in. Guess i should carry a water proof pen. that way , i could also write down the numbers of the boats that almost run me down.

I did get to see some really cool stuff though, dogfish cruising the surface feeding, bass within a foot of my kayak feeding, horseshoe crabing maiting?, and a huge ray 4-5 feet across cruising the shadows. Great night for sight seeing wished I could have gotten some takers but I think there was just too much bait for them to be intrested in my lures, I did try everything.

Agreed! They seem to be so focused on the baby spearing? They've just been running threw it with there mouth open. I couldn't get any to nibbel the other night so I just sat and watched the slaughter. What did you catch the doggie on? Nice report!

Spearing is only a couple bucks a pack at the tackle shops. I was talking to the Marine Co the other day. I asked him what bait the most sucesfull fluke fisherman are using. He said with out a doubt the guys with the biggest and most fluke in their icechests are using either frozen spearing or gulp.

You guys having problems with boats. Do you have a headlamp on and a led anchor light? I also put reflector tape on all four corners. If a boat does keep coming my way at 50 yards I blast him in the eyes witha stinger flashlight and put him out of commision for 30 seconds.

Always- I didn't/couldn't catch the dogfish either just watched them cut through the bait, they looked like mini Jaws. Good sight seeing, not so good catching!

Way to go on your decision to leave the tag in
yeah always carry a small pencil or something in your wallet to right the info down, better to leave the tag in, in my opinion

Out last night after dark wind almost impossible, managed a short bass behind Stone Harbor and called it a night. It was an interesting peddle back to my launch site with white caps in the ICW.

Went out today with my brother. I have an Ocean Kayak Caper and he has a Perception Swift. It's the first time we've made it out together. It was really windy and the water was very choppy. We found a semi protected spot over by Beasley's Point Bridge. We drifted awhile and got a few hits. We walked around a bit near a bridge and made some casts. My brother caught an 18" fluke and a small blue. We made our way back into the yaks and drifted near a bridge. My brother caught a 16" weakie. At dusk, we packed up the yaks, went to Wawa for grub, and went to a small, lit bridge on the OC Causeway. My brother caught a 26" striper.

Notice a recurring phrase....."my brother caught...". That's right, he got a GRAND SLAM, and I didn't catch nuthin.

Next trip he wants to hit the ocean. I'll have to think about that one.

Thinking of outfitting the kayak with the Eagle Cuda 250. Anybody have any experience with it or any other fishfinder/gps?

Arrived at the OC Causeway at 4:30 am and found the wind blowing pretty hard from the west. I originally wanted to launch at this small bridge and hit the sods in the dark. But since the wind was coming across the bay, and it was rough, decided to walk the bridge. It was slack low tide. Got no hits on the bridge. At 5am, launched the yak at the circle beach. With the wind, all drifts were going across the channel towards the sods. I ended up drifting near the sods to stay out of boat traffic. Ended up cathing two 16" throwback fluke. May head out again Tues nite.

Flounder fished SH Sunday during the outgoing. Wound up with a FAT 25" fish on my first drift. Managed another 19" and a 16" throughout the day. Missed another nice one at the boat. In all, it was a nice day. Did have a boater come extremely close to me and got pissed when I put my hands up like "move the f away". He had the whole bay open, but ran 15 ft. behind me. What a jerk off.

Akozols We should have introduced ourselves & me in a barn shirt. Johnny & I were in the black truck at the same area. BTW, plenty of small bluefish showed with the tide. Water was really low & we left shortly after you. Nice to talk with you.

Had I noticed the Barn shirt, I would have given you the secret Barn handshake:) . Nice to talk to ya. I was orginally going to fish the area that you were at, but since the wind was coming across the bay, it was to rough for me there(I'm a weenie).

fished about a half mile off the villas today in the yak between 5pm and 7:30.
Grand total of 5 sand sharks and one eight inch weakie. Bait used was sheddar, salted clam and precut squid along with an assortment of Gulp baits.
Used a top and bottom rig.
Still might be early for in close there, usually gets better in mid-august & september!

Does the municipal marina at SH charge for a Kayak launch? How is that area for fishing? Never really caught anything off the dock at the marina. Appreciate any general info. Launch areas, etc. It looks like a nice no-wake zone. Good for newbies?

thanks,

Nice to meet you lppger. You are an easy customer to deal with. "Are you ready for some football"!!!! Just an idea I had for all you Hobie owners out there. How about we get two teams together for a little game of football on the water in September? Thge hands free operation would make it possible and very intresting due to the nature of the yak and the different strategies that could play on the yaks weaknesses and strentghs.

Hey eeball, where do you launch your kayak around Margate? So far, my wife and I have made two trips in the 'Outfitter'. Both in Elbow channel South side of the OC causeway. We're learning! It's been fun so far but the time goes too fast.

Barrell - The mesh PFD's a little cumbersome for me, okay for the wife. Would the inflatable give me more room to cast? Might be at your place Sat. or Sun. Would like to pick up some rivets. I have to do something with the light. What are your weekend hours?

So far, all is working better than advertised. The kayak is more stable than I thought it would be.

Thanks,

S.B.

hours are 9 to 9 ....7 days a week...I just sold another outfitter to a guy who lives right next to the margate bridge last night. You and your wife can race him and his. You dont have to wear the jacket legaly you need to have it on board. And yes the inflatables are the least cumbersome.

yeah eel, would love to hit them up. let me know when your going. i went out there last night searching for weakies, but ended up just getting used to the yak swirling in the rips around the pilings.of the bridge. i think its gonna take some getting used to. def need something to hook up to the bridge with so i can keep myself in one place. maybe a shortened gaf with a bike innertube connected. any suggestions?

Another sleep deprived fishing trip. Spent all day Saturday checking out the many parks up in Bucks County. Took a small nap and headed down to OC.

Arrived at the Causeway, but the wind was really blowing and it was coming across the bay. It was pretty choppy out there. Decided to fish on foot at a small bridge on the Causeway for about an hour. Had a few hits, but no hookup.

With the direction the wind was blowing, I figured part of Corsons, would be protected. At 5am, launched at Corsons. Plugged a sodbank with a popper with no hits or swirls. I've yet to have any success with a popper yet, and can't wait to have one of those good days. Drifted tha channel for a bit, and caught a short fluke. Went back to the launch to grab a sandwich and met up with fellow Barner, John Waters. We talked for a bit, then we launched our separate ways.

Caught another short fluke and was called over to a spot by John. He found a spot where baitfish were breaking and was catching small fluke. We spent an hour talking while he reeled in fluke after fluke. I had a few hits, but couldn't hook up.

After that, I drifted again and picked up 4 shorts right away. The shorts were only about 12". About 9:30 it started getting crazy out there and decided to pack it in.

John, it was nice talking to you. When it looks like I have some time (yeah, right:) ) I'll get in touch with you about that smallie trip.

Great to meet you last Saturday. I enjoyed our chat and short time together.

I just spoke with hobie...They didnt have any repair kits but said they fix the tires by melting the hole shut with a soldering iron from the outside. I can try to get a repair kit direct from roleez if that doesnt work. A new tire and rim goes for $45. I will give you one for $36 if you want to go that route.

I Just bought a hobie kayak mirage from Kathy and George @ Sterling Harbor. I decided
to hit the water right behind their shop for a maiden fishing voyage. Jigging an OldBayside shrimp,
I started catching a couple small throwbacks ; then I hooked something good.A nice flounder that
pulled the boga grip to around 3 1/2 pounds. I paddled up to the dock and Kathy took a few pics. I couldn't get over
how fast the hobie mirage can cruise with the pedals and with such little effort. VERY comfortable fishing too. A Big thanks to Sterling Harbor.
Goes without saying what great people George and Kathy are!
