Was just wondering if anyone knows anything about the cast net throwers that you can buy. Talking about the ones that look like a plate with a handle on them. Anyone ever used one and know if they work well. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks

I don't use them nor know much about them. I would guess that the "throwers" limit you as to the size of the net and weight you can throw. Learning to throw a cast net properly is not overly difficult. A little practice on the front lawn and you are good to go. Go to Calussa nets website and look for the video they have which shows different techniques of throwing nets. Folding the net properly is the key, the rest is as easy as throwing a heavy frisbee.

Throwing a net definatley isn't hard with a little practice. You just have to give it time and have the patience. Start out with something small like a 4'. I actually tried one of the dinner plate things at a boat show and I threw far better without it. Maybe it was because I already know how to throw a net.
You're best bet is to try to learn from somebody you know. If you live anywhere near central Jersey, call Harry's Army Navy, ask for AJ in fishing, and if I know ahead of time I'll bring in one of my nets and teach you in the parking lot.

You don't need the thrower, it takes away from the sport of it.
I can't tell you how stoked I get when I throw a perfect circle and can barely lift the net back in, cause it's got 30lbs of peanuts it there
Just practice a bunch, I learned my first few casts. I am a firm believer of holding some in your mouth, one hand about three feet in front of the bit you have in your mouth, then the other hand on the ring with holding a foot fold of the net.
Hope this helps

Like others have said, you would be better served by learning to throw the net without the dinner plate. Get a cheap net from Wallyworld and learn to throw it well, then move up. I started with a 6' radius but should have started with a 4. I learned and now am throwing an 8. The larger nets with more weight are more difficult, or shall I say require a different method than I used with the smaller nets.
Its more about generating the centrifugal force than throwing the weight. Practice, practice, practice.
Good luck. If you are near Belmar I would be willing to help you learn.

Bunker cast nets needd wider mesh openings, 8'plus diameters & weight. Those ring nets are shallow water use only, not for herring, bunkers etc.
Heavier nets require a different approach to throw, then lighter nets, both can be thrown with ease if proper load is learned.

Great Video. Watched it three times. I think I can actually throw a net w/ some practice. I guess it's time to dust that net off!

Great video. I guess starting with a 4 footer and moving up is the way to go. What is the average size net to use once you get good at it?
