Officially the closing date is May 3. Marylands DNR has left open the possibility of extending the season based on water temps. If water temps are below 65 and not anticipated to exceed 65 over 48 hours, the season may remain open. We're supposed to receive 48 hours notice of impending closure.
last year we had a spike in water temps the first two days in May and the season was closed may 3. After that the temps dropped below 65 and stayed there for weeks. Plenty of fish remained on the Flats but it was illegal to target them.

Curious. What is the logic for colosing the C&R season when the water temp gets over 65. After the closure can you then keep fish or is there a total closure for a time period.

Years back a study was done by our DNR on release mortality. Findings were mortality is very low until water temps exceed 65. That's when fish started dying at a higher percentage. Flats are closed period after that. We can not keep any fish at all until June, after most have left the area. There is talk about allowing one keeper only (under a certain size) beginning mid-May, but no final determination has been announced yet.
