I asked this in the freshwater forum with no response.

Fishing the mullica..

I know that the herring are the food of choice but do you really think a hungry striper can resist a fresh surf clam infront of its face? even if its in fresh/bracish water?

I have a half bushel left from Sun. and want to fish the river today but I don't have any herring and I am tired of trolling and casting for them. Any one ever try this.

Sure, they use surf clam in the Del River freshwater section all the time. It definately works. :D Stripers don't forget everything they've learned about feeding when they enter freshwater.... ;)

Clams are affective for stipers in fresh water. If the herring run is on though you know what is best.

I took live eels to Percy Priest lake in Tenn. There are no eels in that lake.
Every eel I took was eaten by a striper. Some things are just part of their DNA.

Bass are opportunistic feeders, whether you want to believe it or not. They will eat anything that looks, smells, and/or tastes like food. Eels and clams are both food items for them, even in the "wrong" settings. BTW, a lot of freshwater bass love eels, because eels live most of their lives in freshwaters, lakes, and ponds. In that instance, they are in the "correct" setting.

The river was real warm, my guess would be low 60's on the incomming tide. We set up out by the first can markers if your heading out. After about 45 of chumming we had out first run-off. The next run I was able to set the hook, 4-5lb catfish. From there the action was non-stop. We would have loaded the cooler with these if we had the right gear and if we ait them but I was out there looking for monster line sides. Found a new catfish bait. Anyway we caught some fish and had a few laughs.

I think the Stripers are gone around there. Water is just too warm.

I dunno. Wait for the next push of herring up the river, and you'll see the big bass again. There are bass in the Mullica year round.
