Rod will be used out of a kayak so I do not want anything bigger than 6'6". I plan to most use plugs and soft plastics for stripers in it. I really want something that can handle a 20-30# fish, but not be really big and akward. I am also not looking to spend a lot of money, 100 bucks tops. Thanks for the help.

 Ask NJ.Angler Team...The Nj.Angler Team does alot of Kayacking for all gamefish!

I recommend the American Rodsmith Kayack Series rod,or a 6'St.Croix with a US.REELSpinning Series.

$100.00...Go to www.esatcoasttackle.com (http://www.esatcoasttackle.com) and see if their closeout specials meet your needs and price range.

I'm sure if you go down the list of paid advertisers here at the Bass barn...You will come away with an educated purchase from some "real anglers,"not "salesmen and women!":D

Good Luck and as always...

$100 tops is a tough order to fill...Daiwa Black Gold on an Ugly Stik wouldn't be a bad place to start looking, and you could probably throw it together for a hundred if you look around real hard. I've seen some Penn combos featuring a 550ssg on a 6'6" in that neighborhood. A hundred beans would go a lot further if you looked around in the used realm...lots of nice stuff pops up in the Barn Sale too.

Per dollar spent...its really hard to beat the Black Golds. I've got 5 of the old silver C series reels that the BGs are based on...direct descendants actually. They're older than I am and work like they were built yesterday.

You may want a longer rod depending on how big your kayak is. You need the length to play a fish around the front of the kayak. Not fun when a big fish hangs your line up on the tip of your yak.

I use a St. Croix medium action with a Shimano Symetre 4000 out of my boat. Great rod and about the smoothest reel you'll find. While it won't come in under $100, it's still a reasonably priced setup for what you get.

You really need a long rod with a short handle for kayak fishing, at least that's the best thing. I am told someone is actually makign a specialized yak rod like 7'6" with a short butt section. Strategy wise, I would prolly spend the majority, if not all the money on getting the right rod and strt with a low end reel. the idea being that the wrong rod is going to hurt you a lot more by being difficulat to operate (long butt makes you sick your arms out, short rod limits casting versatility). A cheaper reel will prolly last you a season, then you upgrade. Hope that's clear. Sorry it's not a direct answer.

I actually have that exact setup for my Largemouth Bass Setup, well actually its switched now so I have the Symetre on the St. Croix Triumph, and my new Daiwa Capricorn on my 6'6" St. Croix Premier.

As far as having a long enough rod for the kayak, The kayak is around 9'6" I believe, it is the Hobie Sport Fisherman. I use a 6'6" rod for bass fishing and I can get fish around the front just fine. Thanks for the heads up though. Anyone else?

I've found John at the "Barrell" in Brigantine to be very knowledgeable about the info you are looking for.
