Didn't hear about anyone fishing from it though.

A couple of years ago I saw an aircraft carrier come out of the Naval pier and go out around the hook. That was pretty impressive.
Was that a full size carrier? I didn't think they had the depth needed for a full size carrier to go into Earl.
I have seen flat tops there but I think they were mostly helo carriers?
Does anybody know about this?
I did see a very large flat top off the coast last spring. I was on land so I have no idea what ship it was but one thing I can tell you, It was huge.

Never saw a Carrier inside the Bay.
But some of those container ships moving in/out of the Verazano Narrows are Frickin HUGE !!!
It's a shame that I have been told they leave here empty all the time..

There is nothing -- absolute NOTHING -- half so much worth doing
as simply messing-about in boats.

You're really not really going to see the large 1000'+ VLCC's (crude oil tankers) around the east coast, as they mostly operate in the Gulf and California-Alaska. The large ship that you saw was probably a RoRo (Roll on-Roll off) ship, which is a ship with a loading platform where trucks will drive onto the actual ship to load containers and bulk products. RoRo's don't draft too much as there are multiple cargo decks, and will usually have a humongus freeboard as much as 100'! A lot of RoRo's and decent sized container ships trade in Newark and NYC.

Custom it's a ball diamond ball. It means a vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre. It really only applies when it's working.
I believe these are Amphibious Assault Ships.

They carry of course Marines, AV-8b Harrier's, and a range of helicopters.
