For any type of fishing what is the advantage of using a bait casing rod over a spinner. I bought a bait casing rod and reel last year. I love throwing lures with it but I still caught more fish with the old spinner rod

The advantage I see is easier casting and lure control, however it's really what your comfortable with. For me 10 of my rods are baitcasters and only 4 are spinners. Others may be just the opposite, but would say that group would be small. The only time I use a spinner is when I'm fishin a small or weightless bait, sometimes a spinner bait, but again usually small. There is no spool resistance like with a baitcaster, so it will be easier to cast these small baits successfully. My favortie would have to be fishin the 7' St. Croix Premier, light action with a Shimano Symetre spinner for small weightless worms and jigs on 6-8lb. test line. I think the more you fish both the baitcaster and the spinner you will see the advantages of one over another.![]()

fish come and go,but the memories of fishing with family will last for ever.
G-Man hit it.
Both have their time and place though. Baitcasting is great for heavier baits like Spinnerbaits, Buzzbaits, jigs etc...
Spinning gear makes casting lighter weights easier, plus there is no feeling like catching a 3-5lbs smallie on 6lbs test

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. If I absolutely had to have just one it would be a spinner. A good spinning rig can handle a wider range of lure weights. It can cast the same big plugs as a baitcaster plus you can go down as light as 1/16th oz and still cast effectively.
