Default 7/2-7/3 Fish-n-Chip Report... Fishing is slow...

Did a overnight with a few Buddies and Barn members. Started out around 19 and jigged, had bait and tuna marks on the bottom but to no avail. We did manage to find half acre schools of 40-50 pound Bluefin boiling and busting on bait. We trolled these schools for hours with almost no bites. We tried bait, lures, jigs... Eventually a suicide bluefin bit a blue and white Llander and we boated a 40-50# fish. There is alot of life around the 19 lump. These schools had lots of fish in them and they were not shy, they were balling bait (most likely sand eels) but I also saw them chasing 8-10" unknown types fish around on the surface.

The water temps are 71.5 over last weeks temps of 68.5-69*.... The water color was "OK" looking at best

We overnighted with nothing to show.

We started our troll down to masseys for a last ditch effort on getting our "over" fish for the trip, but it wasnt meant to be. My sounder took a crap, hopefully just a power source issue (its only 5 years old, and a very expensive furuno)

So we couldnt find any bait to jig.....

Hopefully the fish turn on in full swing in the next week or two.... Its gonna bust open soon.... I marked a fair amount of large fish on the bottom and very LARGE schools of sand eels.

Overall, we had descent weather a good trip and put meat in the box...

Default Thank you very much for the report

Been waiting to hear how some boats did and you certainly gave it one heck of a effort and I am sure the next time out you will get them good.

Capt. John, Thank you. We will be back out sometime next week, and Hopefully the fishing improves.... But, even at its worst, its still better than working!

It wont be long before it gets real good!

We had a 10' whiting hit a butterfly jig at the 19 F lump on Wednesday. Maybe that is the mystery fish you were seeing.

    Swab,

Thanks for posting up and at least you were rewarded with a keeper BFT....my guess is give it a week on the back side of the upcoming full moon on the 7th and then things should start to get interesting.

I dont think it was whiting on the surface.... These were silver/ amber color.... Maybe small bluefish or something of that nature...The tuna were on there sides coming out of the water chasing these fish.... It was a sight to see, they were swimming with the boat at times on the surface.

Not saying it was them, but whiting do some to the surface, and they also feed heavily on sand eels. This is not the first time this year I've heard of whiting caught inshore. Apparently the same is going on in the mudhole up north with tons of sand eels and whiting. That's a good sign for the BIG bluefins in the fall if they stick around.

The baitfish being chased were shaped like blue runners and bluefish.

There was lots of whiting in the area last year also, we were catching them on jigs twice there size.

    Default Meat in the Box

Yeah Capt Swab put us on the fish. Nice to start the season off catching.
Brad showed the #50 bft to the Bert's deck like a pro. Can't believe all the tuna we saw boiling. Think they were small blues or mac's thet were chasing. Cant wait to get back out and hammer the Accurate #50W over something like the C/R ran into.
