    Default Hammerhead at Harrah's

Went out Saturday afternoon with my 5 year old granddaughter & wife. While drifting for fluke in front of Harrahs, the little one says look Grammy there's something swimming over there. Not 10 feet from the boat was a Hammerhead shark about 20 inches long. It seemed to follow the boat for a while, when I bent over to get some strip bait to toss at it ,I must have spooked it, it swam away and went under. Never expected to see a hammerhead inside. It was neat to see. As I looked out at Brigantine beach with all the vehicles and swimmers on the inlet side I wondered, Is this Like Jaws? As far as fluke 1 keeper and 15-20 thro-backs.

Saw the same thing last year in front of Avalon. We had about a 2 foot hammerhead swimming around the boat for about a half hour. It would swim up to and around the boat, disappear, come back, etc. Very cool to see. Had a nice 3.5-4 foot shark swimming next to the boat this weekend in the same spot.

I was once told that hammerheads birth in shore. My Dad saw a number of juveniles while fishing the beach at TI one morning years ago.

i caught a four foot hammer Saturday. we saw tons of bunker. had one shark take one on our lived line bunker. he took it into the air out of the water..chopping at the bunker just like jaws..way cool....kept on fishing with bunker and hooked into a hammer head.....brought him into the boat....removed the hook...back into the water for a great release.

not from pics I see of bonnethead sharks:

The bonnethead shark or shovelhead, Sphyrna tiburo, is a member of the hammerhead shark genus Sphyrna. The Greek word sphyrna translates as hammer, referring to the shape of this shark's head - tiburo is the Taino (Native American) word for shark.

Hammerheads are definitely in the AC area. I saw a decent 4-5 footer at the GE Reef on Saturday. I saw him three different times in three different spots on the reef leading me to believe it was more than one fish of similar size. No doubt they were hammerheads.

What I saw had a thinner head than that shown above. it was narrow compared to the shovel head above. It was close enough for me to touch it with my rod and it didn't spook 'til I moved to get the strip bait and bent down in its direction. Mankiller island is right there and according to local lore it's called mankiller because it is a shark breeding or birthing area. No matter it was cool to see it.

caught plenty of bonnet head sharks in FL. we had hammerheads around the boat pretty thick off LBI last weekend, boated a few and lost a few. they were chasing blues out of the water , blue filet or mackeral dindn't matter, it wasn't taking long to hook up.
