I'm looking at getting a new conventional chunking rod - want something of quality to pair with an accurate boss magnum 197. Anyone use Calstars?? Heard they where good blanks.

Looking to spend around 300 beans - any suggestions?? Forgot to add - will be using 20lb Momoi Diamond..

    Thanks!

If you like Loomis go with a Bucara 15-30 or look at Capefear's MAN-O-WAR and would look reel good with a Accurate 197

I have 2 Penn 320 GTI's I use as primary chunkin rig matched with Penn Power sticks...great combos...nice sensitive tip, but with enough backbone to crank in the biggins. The 320's are great, adjustable tension on freespool makes it a perfect chunkin reel in MHO.

It was a tough decision on how to spend some of my tax return but I;ve decided I'm gonna have my friend frank build me a custom on a 7' St. Croix legand elite. He has a few on his boat Ive used and they are sweet.

Bigs - checked out the man-o-war - they look real nice!

I have the 320GTI on a 6'6 lamiglass and a 320GT2 on a power stick (which I bought last seasonas a combo package at Sports Authority for $109 ) I also use the Shimano Baitrunner 4500 on a 6'6 ugly stik as well spooled with 15lb Berley Big Game always nice to catch a biggun on the light stuff.

We use St. Croix Tidemaster TC 6'6" MHF rods with Penn 965's spooled with 16# Ande green tournament for chunking. It's a nice setup for chunking ,it's light enough for the little guys, but will also put the brakes on 40#'s with authority. The rod will handle a 5 or 6 oz. sinker with a chunk with out feeling like a wet noodle when you lob your rig into the deep, but has a nice action when you get hooked up.

Cape Fear Live bait 16-30. We have 3 of them, super soft tip, which is important for chunking and enough backbone to handle just about anything you will encounter.

    Couple other soft tip blanks...

Seeker CLB708...nice composite blank that would do a good job and fill in nicely for deep water fluke and inshore tog...

Lamiglass BMB1143F...eglass blank that would do nicely trimmed to an 11 tip....can also be used for ocean fluking and very good tog rod.....

    Chunking for tuna or bass?

Calstar makes great blanks. I have built several on the Graphiter blanks, super light and tough. I find they are on the high side of their ratings though. I consider the 700XL a bit overkill for bass, but many DE chunkers use heavy rods. It's only rated at 10-25lb, but IMO it's a 25 rod. I built it with Aftco Lightweights and use it as a light tuna rod.

For inshore stuff I like Lami blanks alot better.

Brian- I'll just add my preferences as well. I like the 6'6" St. Croix Premier Series. I use them for chunking bass and at times for deepwater fluking/ sea bass. I do not like them in the rips though- too much power.

I have paired these rods with calcutta 700's and they have worked for me perfectly. Shiman has a new series- metal colored, that I would probably switch to. They cost a little less, and have better cliker placement and also a larger handle.

BTW- you chunk? In the big aquarium???

Tom - yup - a new aquarium chunker.

Most of the chunking I've done is on Flynns Knoll (off of Sandy Hook).

I can't wait for the no bones!!
