Going out saturday night for my first Drum trip...could use a little help with areas to work...not looking for anyone's "spots" mind you, just some ideas on general areas. Got a friend hooking us up with a bunch of fresh clams.

Planning on blasting a lot of light on the water as I've heard this works for drum but would like to hear from some barners on this.

Also planning on using my typical striper tackle, Penn 320 GTIw)Penn Power Stick(Medium Action) with 30lb test.

As always any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanx in advance.

    Capt. Greg

PS...Going out of Maurice river. Weather permitting, any spot in the bay is possible.

    Greg:

I'm no expert drum fisherman-and I usually go to "The Dark Side" Slaughters to catch em- but if I were you-

I'd bring at least 2 sacks of fresh surf clams. I like that the empty shells are down there chumming it up a little for me- rather than buying the pre shucked.

I head to a nice spot in the shoe, banana peel, or the pin top. I'd definitely have some fresh bunker with me for the stripers.

I would NOT keep my lights on like that. I never heard that and I think it will cause trouble with other fishermen close by.

I would try to keep my crew QUIET as far as slamming hatches and stomping feet. Especially if you are in shallower water.

I think your tackle is just fine. I like the double hook rigs so you can put several clams on one rod.

I would keep and eye on the rod tip as sometimes these babies bite like a weakfish.

Anyway- that exhausts my knowledge on the subject.
Hope you catch a bunch. Have a great night.

Thanks for the advice Tom, I was thinking about pintop, and my fishin bud has a line on a bag of fresh clams...we will toss the shells as you recommend. I was looking at the charts and decided I may try the coral beds off slaughter beach if the weather allows.

You don't have to go at night. There was a major bite on the morning tide this AM, during daylight. SE of 14 foot. I was crossing over from the dark side NE of 14 foot and my sounder was lgihting up. I'm going tomorrow morning. Too many things to fish for now, tough to make a decision.

My personal opinion(not backed by any first hand experience), is that the strength of the current is what matters for the best black drum bite.

But.....I'm the Nightstalker... LOL...seriously though, I work graveyard and night time works best for me...keeps me on my schedule. I'll be back to daylight fishin for flatties in a couple weeks.

I think I'll keep the lights off as we hope to pick a couple stripers too.

Good luck tomorrow Phil and thanx for the tips.
