Fished in my yak from 10am to 2pm today with just one other boat on the water. Overcast skies, cool air temps and clear water.
I tried drifting for walleye for the first hour and only caught a small yellow perch. Moved to my favortie Bass Spot and broke out the plastics. First fish was a fat 14 incher, second was a modest 9. The wind picked up so I headed back to the launch. Spent a little time in the small cove and had one fish throw the hook when it jumped out of the water. Last fish of the day was 11 inches.
On my way home I stopped at Silver lake for a little scouting. There were a bunch of kids on the shore fishing. I showed them how to catch sunnies which made them think I was an awesome fisherman! I surprised myself when my first cast produced a 10 inch red breasted sunny! Has any one else fished this lake from a boat? It is loaded with lilly pads.
They are some nice looking bass. I was there last week walking around the lake but didn't even get a bite for like an hour. I only saw 2 really small bass and that was all. Its really frustrating because there are some nice bass in that lake. They are very strict about this lake, driving around with their lights on to kick everyone out.
The walleye fishing seems to shut down around mid summer and it stayed shut down all last fall for me. Maybe they only feed at night with the high temps? They may move into the deep end at this time of year, but we haven't really been able to catch them consistently in deep water.
In the spring the bite is pretty good, they're usually in 12-18' of water, sometimes close to shore. We caught hundreds this spring and into summer, all day long even in bright sun, but the bite really turns on the last 20 minutes before they kick everyone out. We've tried starting real early in the dark (4:30am or so), but the early morning bite never seemed any better than the daytime.
Not much luck at all with artificials and limited success on minnows or shiners (more bass than walleye). Some guys have success trolling with night crawlers. We've always done best just jigging them along the bottom on a jighead. They don't hit too aggressive, usually when the bait isn't moving for me, you just go to jig and there's dead weight and you set the hook. Get some decent bass and nice perch jigging that way too.
Just my advice based on experience, I never really fished walleye except for at this lake over the last 2 years.
Thanks for all the feedback!
If you wanna fish silver lake ill head down there with you, I've heard there are some pretty big guys in there too, i also have a kayak, just send me a pm if you wanna get out there.
I got out once again from 10:00am to 12:00pm in search of something bigger! The sun was beating down and the lake provides almost no cover. I paddled to my spot but someone else was already fishing the area anchored up. After 30 minutes of no fish he moved so I went to work. 5 inch Watermelon senko with red flakes wacky rigged did the trick! This 16 inch bass was fat!
While drifting in my yak an even larger bass swam right by me...at least 22 inches long.
Fished the back corner of the lake in the kayak today with soft plastics and got the skunk! The bait fish were not as plentiful as previous trips and the top water splashes were almost non existent.
I only spent an hour in that area before heading back to the boat launch. On shore I played around with some sunnies and talked to a couple other anglers. 2 guys trolling in a small boat picked up a few walleye, perch, crappie and a white bass. I didn’t ask them what they were using…I assumed night crawlers.
