Default Adding Decals/lettering to a rod

I know the rod builders frequent this forum and the plug guys probably know the answer to this too. I want to add custom lettering and a decal to an existing (new) rod that I am giving as a gift. The lettering and decals are adhesive (from mudhole), but I am curious if I should apply a rod finish/epoxy over it or leave it as is. If I should use a finish, any recommendations? Thanks

anything that I add to the rod blank ie decal or lettering, I cover with the same material that I apply to the guide wrappings..usually flex coat. I am not sure how uv resistant flex coat is so I usually finish off all my flex coat applications with a coat of uv resistant marine varnish.

When I apply the flex coat over a decal I cover the rod blank all the way around, the same as with rod wraps.

Like greybeard said. Usually when I put a decal on it is above the diamond wrap. When you coat it you have to coat the decal and the entire diamond wrap or w/e is above your fore grip so it is one continuous coat (or else it will look sloppy). Your probably better off having a rod builder do it because the rod has to spin for about 8 hours until the flex coat sets. I also use a heat gun to pop all the micro bubbles that get trapped in the flex coat when you mix the two parts.

Thank you for the replies fellas. Going to order lettering, decal and rod finish from mudhole and give it a shot!

Like Kyle said. You gotta keep that rod turning to keep the finish smooth. His use of the heat gun should as well, be followed.
