Default barrier islands out of Oyster

Haven't been in 5 years but used to be able to go to Oyster and hire a guide to drop you off on one of the barrier islands in the early morning and fetch you back late afternoon. great surf fishing off the ocean side of the island. I think it was called Wreck Island.

We rented a cottage in Smiths Beach which is due west of Eastville.

Ill be on the look out. Be down sun thru Tuesday. Bringing 2 yaks if u care to take some drifts. Gonna bag the trip to concrete ships Bc the surf may be as choppy as ours is right now with the E/NE winds. Probe sticking to the waters by the campground and target fluke and croaker.

Good #'s of keeper fluke can be had right by the campground,
if you know where to look. We caught our own minnows right
at the Miss Jennifer dock. Also fish this lighted dock after sundown
with grass shrimp (catch in minnow trap with crushed crab and
throw into grass at high tide). If you are looking for fluke, try
small island (low tide) with with ruins right out of the gate. There
are some deep cuts in between sand bar and campsites that
will hold fluke. At Midnight we would go to the miss Jenifer dock
armed with grass shrimp and catch spike weakfish. The kids called
this area the magic dock. To catch minnows, we used kibbles and bits
in our minnow trap and tied it right by the dock at low tide. We would
catch enough minnows for the day. Once you find the spot, power
drift the cut along sand bar. We were able to get a dozen keepers
per tide (5 years ago),when no one else caught any fluke. Good luck
    I hope this helps.

You should be able to purchase minnows or minnow trap at the campground
    bait-tackle shop. Good luck.

Weekend fishing and crabbing was great right off the piers. Saturday we had 42 crabs mostly 6"-7"ers. Sunday fishing with the kids off the piers; countless small Croaker and Spot, plus about 15 Red Drum in the 10"-14" range. What a blast watching the kids on ultra lite rods fight those drum. Site 602.

We rode by twice but nobody was outside but the kayak. Did about the same as you-croakers and reds mostly. Pedaled out to the little island to watch the hawks which was cool. I was kinda hammered when u drove by on mon and passed out for the afternoon-sorry. Had to roll out on Tuesday but stooped to see the concrete ships on way out. Wish I had time to bring the yaks there-looks like u can paddle between them and they are real close to the launch. Sux to only have 2 days there. Hope y'all enjoy the rest of your trip.

Concrete ships are a great place to fish at night or low light periods with eels. The bigger bass aren't really there yet, but you can always find a straggler or 2.
If you do get a chance, next time you paddle out there in low light, try jigging the 12" gulp eels on a jighead on the bottom, if there are no bluefish around. You might be surprised what you find...

Great thread guys...this brings back some good memories.
We used to go down there every year in June.
Great campground for families and kids, safe place.
They used to keep it that way by trying to keep the place filled with regulars during the season, limiting the transient traffic.. but things may have changed since then.

We got to be friends with the guy who did Maintenance...I think his name was Frank....always had a good time down there. Every time we went,. it was like visiting long-lost family.

IMO it's one of the nicest campgrounds on the Eastern Shore.
As many have also said, the access to a lot of the nicest things to do down there, makes it an attractive part of the package.

Glad you all had a good time down there, thanks for the reports BLTal and others.

They bring back some great memories.

Thanx darkskies. Was thinking about trying some eels maybe after our striped run starts to wind down this year and maybe stay right at kiptopeke for a few days. Sounds like a better option than flying to Florida this year(cheaper too) and dealing w/snow birds after our season ends.

We'll be going there next year for the first time in 5 years, we'd gone there the previous 18 years in a row. I miss that place for the total relaxation and the fishing.

I didnt really do much fishing this week down there, but we caught a few nice croakers just out of Oyster boat launch in the first 60 foot hole you hit. We really wanted to look for clams but after cutting my foot twice on an oyster bed i said screw it, tried for flounder with no luck. The back bays there are so much bigger than Jersey, I felt nervous going on the hunt for fluke with my boat and not knowing anyone down there or the water... so maybe next time if we have a partner. I also fished cherrystone island for an hour and caught a few small stripers, but nothing spectacular. Found a nice hole on a chart I wanted to try 2 miles off of cherrystone in the bay but with winds never got around to it. Also crabbed for an hour, I waded with four handlines, caught about 50 crabs but almost all were females and most had eggs, threw em all back
