As bad as their handling and release tactics are, at least they are not as bad as some striper fishermen that kill every big fish they catch with zero chance of release.

Seems like they should have some rules for how you have to handle and release the fish. Looks like the scene from JAW's where everyone has dollor signs in their eyes.

I know why it's popular, just take a look at your average Floridian fisherman Ron. The fact is a very large percentage of the people on the water down here have absolutely no respect for our resources, and would have no issues with killing a 50 year old fish for the sole purpose of taking a photograph. Flash some tournament swag and the possibility of a payday in front of these clowns and they'll kill tarpon all day long with enthusiasm.

As bad as those tourneys are, there are people out the doing far worse. These inbred knuckleheads spear tarpon in La.

In general I hate tournaments. I suppose they keep some captains in business and many like the thrill (as ODC said 'of a payday') but I personally believe they have *no* place in fishing. These are fish... it's not an athletic endeavor (I mean by that an athletic competition), no matter the "skill" involved (which is questionable at many levels).

now spearing tarpon seems completely moronic since there is no such thing as a good spear-and-release

Wow, that is just plain wrong. I just don't understand how those guys can stomach that sideshow.

Do your part guys, send in your info and sign the petition. Some things are just plain wrong, this is one of them.

I thought that Tarpon were supposed to be handled the same way Florida mandates Grouper to be handled. I also believe large Stripers should be handled the same way.

They should be Frank. It's a good example of human greed and self centerdness. (Is that a word?) Anyway, you get the point. The treatment of the resource is one thing but can you imagine fishing in that circus? Hey, I may be coming down this weekend. I'll let you know.

I fished the Pass a few years ago. The quantity of boats was the same as in the video. The handling for boatside pictures the same. The only difference I can see is dragging it to the shallows to be weighed and more pictures. A valued fishery going to hell.

I can never understand how a lot of people spend so much money doing something they love (fishing) and yet they treat the objects of their affection (fish) with little to no respect. I doubt that many of those fish live after being handled like that and for how long. Way too much stress to survive that mistreatment. Happens up here all the time as well. Guys throwing fish back into the water, dropping them onto decks, kicking them

Because for them, it's not about the fish, it's about their ego trip.
