    Question Nantucket Surf Fishing

I may be in the area during the week of April 8th and was wondering if should I bring the surf pole?

I'm thinking it's a little early for bass or blues up there, is there anything else running on the beach? I should be on the Sconset side of the Island.

I hear there are a few freshwater ponds that I can drop a line in and if all else fails, maybe a local head boat

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I was there for a week last summer without a rod.

They have a great flounder fishery that many do not go after that I'm sure you will find in the wash. Water gets deep fast on the ocean beaches but is shallow around the bay. I did see Tog around the pilings at the docks at the White Elephant so I would try all the docks you can get on.

Great Island with awesome beaches and excellent food.

I'm looking forward to it and why I didn't think of fishing structure...I don't know

Someone else also told me that there may be some Winter Flounder around in the surf. If the season is still open, I may be in luck.

You may run into bass, too. Normally, April would be too soon up there, but the fishing has started early all the way up and down the East Coast. Definitely bring a rod.

Never been there in April but have fished the island many times, spent alot of time talking to the locals and they told me the resident Schoolie Bass become active in April, by the way they consider their schoolie Bass 30 to 35 inch fish, they can be found in the Harbor area in the back where the water warms faster, a good spot to look early according to a local is a spot called jetties beach you can climb down the jettie and get in the water and wade alongside the jetty in waist high water, the bottom is covered with eel grass the locals will swim live eels all around the eel grass and catch the early season Bass coming into the harbor to feed in the warmer water, jetties beach also has a jettie where Tog should be available if you are good on jetties and like to Tog fish. Stop in Fishers Tackle and talk to Bill Fisher and he will give you the real scoop on whats going on on the island.

Well I guess its justified that I bring my rod, in fact a couple will be in order; one for the surf and one for fishing structure.

Thanks for advice; I'm definitely going to give it a shot

i would say you have a fighting chance,
i go up there normally early june and sling eels .

there are always resident fish that hang on yr round but doubt the big girls are that far north yet.

I will be up there the last weekend of July. I assume it is pretty good timing for up there. Prob will fish Sconset beach, never fished up there. I will be using plugs, what bait will be in the water that time of year?

The word from the locals is that you want to hit the beaches right up the road from the Coast Guard Station in the main harbor in town. Anywhere from the small light house to the bulkheads will do. There’s a real quick current running through there and not too deep.

I would figure that at this time of year, there is plenty of boat traffic buzzing the area. Bass, flounder, Blues and Porgy are what you should expect. Also, most of your bait and tackle shops are on that side of the island. By the way when I was there, it was still a little early in the year and I didn't catch anything but it was just nice to fish the island of Nantucket

I also stayed in Sconset Village right on the beach, really enjoyed walking the beaches in Sconset, it was very secluded. From what I could tell the water is a little deeper on that side of the island and boy was it ripping. You should expect the same catch in Sconset, Bass, Flounder and Blues. Good Luck.

Bill Fisher Tackle has a decent weekly email report, pointing to stripers and bluefish on various beaches. Bring lots of metal and long rubber. There are a lot of squid and sand eels around. www.billfishertackle.com
