Fly rod for the back bay

Im looking for a decent fly rod i can use this summer. I spend most summer nights in the back behind wildwood fishing with clams, this summer i want to try something different and try to catch some fish on the fly, so i was wondering if anybody has any suggestions on rods and flies.

A 8 or 9 wt rod would be good. If only getting one rod I would go with a 9 wt. as it will cover you all the way around. As far as lines go I would go with an intermediate line over a floating one as it will cast better in any kind of wind and would be good for working sod banks and flats. You can still work some popping flies with it.

If you like catching on surface then a floating line is best and you can get your fly down using clousers and weighted flies if need, but they are not as wind friendly.

Sinking lines are super if fishing deeper areas especially if there are strong current and will cast the best in heavy winds.

Since you are new I would stick with the intermediate. You will have success and if you like it you can always get extra spools with different types of lines.

The key to fly fishing is learning how to cast. It is not all that hard. You just have to get the feel and let the rod do the work. Most new fly anglers tend to try and overpower their casts. Once you get started you will know when you make a good cast. You will feel it and the more you cast the easier it get to the point where you will not have to think about it. Also get some casting advise from someone who knows. Get thee to a club or make friends with someone who knows.

You may consider crushing the barbs on your flies.. at least until you get the hang of casting...

Good point, I know how to cast and I still crush all my barbs, you don't need them.
