    Question Hilton Head Surf Fishing

    Hey all,

Heading down to Hilton Head SC on June 2 for a week. Planning on bringing my surf fishing stuff. Just wondering if anyone has fished that area and what i should expect.

From what I hear its alot of sharks....Which, it is also illegal to "fish" for...
I have a feeling ill be "accidentally" catching a few.

    Thanks

I grew up in Beaufort just north of HHI. Yeah a lot of sharks and sting rays in the surf but also spot tail bass (redfish) flounder and trout. I recommend fresh shrimp and or live finger mullet or mud minnows. If u can find a dock on the back side of the island that has lights on at night try throwing some light colored fin-ess lures. Bait fish are attracted to the light so bigger things come to eat them. Also great sheepshead fishing around pilings rocks and bridges. For them just go down to riverbanks and grab fiddler crabs. You'll see em by the thousands. Take bug spray cuz the sand gnats are worse there than anywhere else in the world!!

How'd you make out? I've been fishing there for years. Never caught much other than sharks and rays. Brought in a 4 foot black tip last year, closed the beach for half an hour. Tourists were not happy!

i only went fishing at sunset and at night because i used my casting net to get some mullet in the surf, then chunked them up at night to fish...got about a 3.5 ft sand shark....then a whole bunch of black tips that were smaller then that. dad got one croaker.

Yep, I've seen fins swim between the shore and myself while wading out to cast. Caught hammerheads, black tip, sand sharks. You can see what I think are tarpon jumping way out. I'll be there next week, pissing off the vacationers!
