I for one don't use a whip finisher on saltwater flies. It's just not necessary. In my opinion, whip finishing is great for tiny, delicate thread heads. Saltwater flies are brutes of the fly world. I'll use a whip if I'm tying for presentation quality, but if I'm sitting down chunkin out a couple dozen Assassins I just put a couple half hitches on the head, cut the thread and give it a coat of head cement. Once you epoxy over that, you'll never ever notice it's not whipped. i have a half dozen whip finishers and never really noticed much of a difference between any of them. The only thing I like on a couple is the rotating sleeve but even that is a minor preference.

Whichever you get, if you do get one, be SURE it comes with detailed, easy to understand directions. I have had several, let them all go. If needed & usually they are not,see Johns post, I tie a decent one by hand.

Same here! I have a couple of whip finishers but never use them for salt water flies. Just so easy to tie them by hand for saltwater flies.

I agree with what John said, but if you do not intend to use epoxy, then a whip finish may be a good idea.
There are several whip finish tools available and each requires a slightly different technique to use it. I suggest that you have an experienced tier show you each technique, allow you to try each, then decide which one works for you. The first one you learn to use is probably the one you will always use. Also, learn to whip finish by hand, without a tool.

Look at the Matarelli, the original and pretty darn good.

Half hitches always work for me, i usually hit the heads with zap a gap and a few coars of head cement for toothy fish.

I agree. The whip finisher is a better tool for those guys using 6/0 thread and #14 hooks. A single half hitch combined with a little head cement or CCG hydro (my favorite thing on earth at the moment) will do just fine.

I have to respectably disagree with you experts on this one. I have a cheapo, $10 whip finish tool that I have used for years. I think it's so much faster than all the finger moves with the half hitch...... or the finger whip finish.
I can do it both ways, but the whip finish tool is much faster. IMHO
Head cement, super glue, hard as nails..... whatever goes on all my salt stuff, but the freshwater dries I only whip finish. The cement messes up the hackle, and a double whip finish never comes undone!
