Default Yamaha V6 4.2L Offshore series engines

    Hello all,
I'm curious about these engines and wondering if any one here has had any experience with them - good or bad, specifically the 250 hp.

I'm high & dry again with my port engine seized up completely. I was told about $10k to fix, so with my current engines being about 7 years old and just over 700 hours I'm looking to weigh out all options.
    1. Fix port engine for $10k
    2. Repower with new E-Tec 225's
    3. Repower with Yami V6 250's
    4. Block up boat for season & wait til the boat shows to shop around - engines & boats... (really don't want this option)

When my E-Tec's have run they're great, but I've had a number of issues over the years since buying them in 2005. Lower units x2, powerheads x2 now, fuel pumps, shifting issues, etc. I'm always told my issues are the first the dealer has seen...
A new boat is always in the back of my mind but I really have no issues with my boat, which is a 2000 Hydra Sports 2796 Vector CC. So if you have feedback to provide on these newer Yami's please let me know. And if you want to give an opinion on my options listed above, I'm open to hearing anything at this point. I'm really torn on what to do...

I would email Adam from Adam Bomb Sportfishing as he has F250's on his HS 2800CC. He went from 2 strokes to 4 strokes.

I'm a four stroke guy and will leave it at that so I don't start a pissing match.

Oh I would try Rudy Marine in DE if you go for Yams....no sales tax.

Last thing I want is a pissing match... don't want a 2 stroke vs 4 stroke discussion. Just looking for info on these new Yamaha's.

thanks for the reply. I've heard DE is a good option to look at.

I have no experience with the 250 but the 300 (same motor) has been great for us so far. Fantastic on fuel and lots of power. Also the current 250 is lighter than the old 250 it replaces.

I'm going to hit 900 hours this weekend on my Yamaha F-250's. No problems yet, they will be getting their 1,000 service this winter.

I've heard nothing but good things regarding the new F300, which is the same family as the new F250.

Those early etecs were either good or bad. And the bad was BAD! We have seen many lower unit and power head failures on 05's. The newer ones are great though! Get rid of of the 05's! The yammies are also awesome! Would recommend either New Etecs or Yammies!

In 2005 the etec dealers were saying the same thing about the early etecs. Now in 2012 the 2005 are no good either. If you want dependablity from day one go with the 4-stroke. I always seem to hear thing like after you work the bugs out the etec ran great. Only time will tell how the new Yamaha block will hold up. It is a little scary not having cylinder sleeves? The 250 and the 300 are the same weight and close in price if your boat is rated for 600hp.

thanks for the replies. Just heard yesterday that BRP may provide some help with fixing port engine to get me back on the water (as their slogan states...). If it's not too bad I'll go that route just to finish off the year, then wait to the boat show season to shop new. Leaning towards the Yamaha's but I'll see...
