I've seen the little Jeeps make it up onto the beach before getting stuck, but those were the ones with the big, fat tires. They did eventually get stuck though.

Most that try not airing down usually don't make it past the ramp on IBSP.

I have a little jeep with those big tires, just wondering if I would have to air all the way down from 35 to 15psi. ?

a lot of guys on Brigantine apparently don't air down but I always do as the jeep liberty really rides nice on 15-17 lbs, but struggles big time at normal street pressure of 30

Airing down makes it easier on your motor and tranny for sure. Truck will glide over top of sand instead of plowing.

That said......ocean city and south is generally pretty firm. A lot don't air down. LBI and north you absolutely need to air down every time. Brigantine is 50/50. Some years it's sets up like a southern beach.....others it can be soft.

I didnnt air down my old jeep..never got stuck..never even bogged downn. But lockers and 35x15 and later on 36x13.5 inch tires helped. My current cherokee...down to 15 psi for me!

    Default I don't in Brigantine!

Every truck is as different as every beach. 2005 Toyota Tacoma is light, lots of ground clearance and has the ability to lock the rear differential. I'm in Brigantine most of the time and most of the year I can drive the beach in 2 wheel drive with the exception of the entrances. Summer gets a little tricky, wheel ruts get deep and some trucks tend to drag bottom. If the beach is all sugar sand like IBSP, Hatteras, or an area I'm not familiar with, I'll take time to air down rather than risk getting stuck. If I have to pull someone out I will air down as well for the added traction due to lack of weight.
The ride is only as bad as the fishing!!

whether it can or can't is a moot point as you get get a permit without 4 wheel drive.

What beach are you asking about? FISHBUCKET is correct for Brigantine you are supposed to have a 4wheel drive not just all wheel drive to obtain the permit. I have seen them on the beach but in the deep sand they have clearance problems and tend to drag on the frame which can lead to getting really stuck. Subaru makes a great all wheel drive set up. I've even seen them in Hatteras. I sold them in the 90's and had several demos that I put to the test. If you can get a permit for a beach they can get the job done, just know your vehicle's limits. If you've never driven on a beach before go with someone who has experience and get some driving tips, it's very different than driving on hard pack. Take time to know ahead of time where your tow points are on the front and rear of your vehicle. When they are buried in the sand or in the dark they can be hard to find.

Things to have in the vehicle:
Shovel (doesn't have to be huge just sturdy with a good handle)
20-30' tow strap without hooks, looped ends are better for safety reasons
jack and a board capable of supporting the weight of the vehicle while jacked
    tire gauge
    flashlight
The ride is only as bad as the fishing!!

i recently bought a 2002 escape....it is all wheeel drive but it has a 4wheel drive option so i could get a permit.
i have driven 4/5 times from one end of brig beach to the other without using the 4x4 option
had no real issues other than avoiding very deep tracks
didn't lower air pressure but i thnk it would be better if i did.
