    Default Blues and Snappers

Had a guy explain to me years ago that snapper blues were a different species of bluefish. He said that snappers are a smaller fish and don't grow as large as regular blues.

I thought it was possible at the time but never gave it much thought until now. Yesterday I decided to take home a few small blues to grill/smoke. These fish were about 2 -> 3 lbs at best. I was surprised to find they all, even one possibly 1 1/2 lb, had roe inside.

Anybody else hear of this ?

Im pretty sure they are the same fish.
As far as roe is concerned I don't remember
seeing it or not. But I usually clean them at
    nite.

`Even small fish, say Stripers, have roe in them. The roe of these small fish will not produce. They are immature as far as being fertilized. When Jersey had a 24 in to 28 in. slot fish i saw plenty of 24 in. Stripers loaded with roe. I think this goes for the 'snappers' too--I've never heard of snapper blues being any other species than Bluefish. And dont forget the Tailor blues - There size is between snapper and bluefish. Kind of a Fluke as far as what size - what 'name'. OR is it a Flounder? To me growing up from when i was a kid (IKE was pres.) and to this day seeing the ads for various size of 'flounder' filets -Fluke commanded a higher price due to its' larger and thicker filets. Either way - its a Flat Fish, just like snapper + tailor + bluefish are different sizes of BLUEFISH.

Listen to Billo.....he's been fishin a looooonnnng time (since Ike, Billo? amazing...)
He knows stuff.....and if you want to hear some amazing stories of what fishing the DB REALLY used to be like, there is a thread here where he talks about it.....pretty cool....

I would just add to that, that bluefish winter in different areas....the biggest ones wintering offshore in the canyons, and the smaller ones migrating with the bass, bunker and other forage as far South as Florida where they catch them in the Winter....

So, my thoughts are because of these separate migrational paths, I can understand how some might think they are different....but they are the same species, same fish, just different sizes, as Billo said......\

BTW Billo haven't talked to ya in awhile...best wishes for good health and a hassle free holiday weekend....

Night time is the right time, to bag a cow, even if you are fishing for local talent at a favorite watering hole. Lol.......either way they all got eggs. Some are fertile some are not, so be careful with your rod.

Good Ole Days in DB ? Yeah ! Tell me about it !

In Fact, the guy was telling me this on a day I was fishing DB in 1970.
I caught my PB 12lb weakfish that day. That was when there were lots of 16->18 lbers.

Maybe it was one of your Tokers.

and..... you can't help it if when you do go out the guy next to ya gets one on the end of his line.....maybe you're good mojo....for anyone but yourself....

I'm calling ya before the next storm rolls in, block some time out....time to catch.....

    *******
Duff and Billo, those were some funny references...growing up in the age of Aquarius, good smoke, and Free Love.....

so..... I gotta ask, was there any free love with chicks who were NOT cows, or did you block that from your memories already....

Do ya's remember Steve Miller -
    "I'm a joker, I'm a smoker, I'm a Midnight Toker.....play my music on the Run"

Or was the mood more Iron Butterfly when you guys were in school?

Iron Butterfly was a flash in the pan.
Steve Miller still puts on a great show today.

1969 I was in Fort Ord Cal. infantry training.
Woodstock was in NY - Missed that one, but Monterey and San Francisco were close. A good time was had by all out there. Nixon (Yes the crook) decided that Vietnam should be wound down. All orders to Vietnam were put on hold.

    Back to music -
Lets face it, the Beatles paved the highway for all who would follow.
    Here's a few -

    Rolling Stones
    Jimmy Hendrix
    Janis Joplin
    Carlos Santana
    Led Zepplin
    Jim Morrison & Doors
    Talking Heads
    Tom Petty
    The Who
    David Bowie
    Eric Clapton
George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers
    John Fogerty - Creedence
    Crosby Stills Nash Young

Unfortunatly we had no (C)RAP back then.

duff, that's a fine list there. Here's a couple more.

    The Allman Brothers
New Riders of the Purple Sage
    The Dead
    Bob Dylan and the Band
    J Geiles Band
    ZZ Top
    Yes
    Emerson Lake and Palmer

And then came disco and the world of music took a nosedive, leading up to polyester clothing and what you accurately refer to as C(RAP)
