Finally decided to "role the dice" offshore and returned to home sweet home (100 Line) after fishing inshore the last few weeks on the 20-30 line. We've been picking (2-3 yft inshore) the last few weeks during the "dog days of summer." Heard of a few fish being caught offshore and needed to investigate! Captain FX on the Tiburon pointed the bow to a northern canyon and off we went at 2am. Slow morning until 10 am when all hell broke loose!! The short rigger with a 4 ounce blue bullet head and medium bally gets CRUSHED!! A few minutes into the fight we knew it was a big fish!! Could it be . . . . a BIGEYE?? Twenty minutes in there was no doubt, this fish wasn't moving! FX and the rest of the crew battled this 225 +/- fish for two hours as I fought the tough seas at the wheel doing my best to keep the fish in the corner of the boat. Finally at 12 noon the fish hits the deck, great fight paid off, EYEBALL on the deck!!
Got back on the troll and the bite just got better! We had a consistant 50lb YFT and White Marlin bite before we called it quits at 3pm with a LONG ride home in solid 3-5 foot seas in a SW 20 knot wind. Final tally was 6 for 7 on yellowfin, 1-4 on whites and a Bigeye!! Great afternoon troll bite!! Five of the seven fish hit skirted ballyhoo, one took a Sterling Tackle Green Machine Spreadar Bar and another on a Sterling Tackle Ultimate Green Squid Daisy Chain! Thanks to a great crew (Joe, George, Dave) and Captain FX who boldly decided to take the chance to run offshore with poor offshore reports!! Just goes to show you . . . you never know!! Can't catch em at the dock!!
