I would think it would depend on the anchor. I have a Delta plow on my 25' Chris Craft with a GOOD Rope only windlass and I no chain, holds every time. I just let a bit more rode out.

Chain sets the anchor, the anchor hold the boat. I would get as much as you can handle. Usually 10-12' of chain is right. A lot of customer come in and look for bigger anchors because it's not holding or digging in. Usually its because they only have 2 feet of chain or so.
I'm a bit over kill but I use 20 ft of 3/8 chain and a 13 lb anchor on my 27 albie,I actually prefer a 15 or 16 lb.I use 3/8 rode and have no problem anchoring in 150 ft
10 ft of chain on 10 lb danforth.
fish come and go,but the memories of fishing with family will last for ever.
30' of 1/4 chain spliced to a 9# danforth, with 250' of 1/2" rode. Grabs pretty quick and holds well. The chain makes the anchor work bigger.
Lewmar ProFish 700 windlass. Works great as long as there's power.![]()

Money won't buy happiness,
But it'll get your ass on a boat, and that's a start.
Thanks for all of the input, I should have mentioned I have a 14 lb Kington anchor with only 3-4 feet of chain now. It seems that I need much more to get the proper holding power. Thanks
WWW.Kingstonanchors.com has an anchor guide with boat, rode, and chain specifications.

I have 15, of 3/8 chain and I replaced the bolts on my shackles with hex heads so it slides through the roller easier.
