There is a test in the service manual but we never do it. If its hard starting and smokes heavy its the vro pump. For the test you unhook the oil line and install a clear hose filled with oil. You put marks down the tube and run the outboard. THis test does you no good since its leaking oil thru when the engine is shut off. We have great deals on VRO pumps at www.barnaclebillsmarinesupply.com

If it came into the shop we would toss the coin and swap out the pump. They offer three different rebuild kits for these pumps. However we never rebuild them. There is to much at risk with a older pump. We offer a credit card that has 3 months same as cash no matter what you purchase. The cheapest way is to purchase it off our web site. You will need to register wit pay pal but its the safest online payment there is. You will not beat our online price even with the shipping to you.

thinking of taking mine (twin 200's) off and going 50-1. heard of a report saying when idling along time, say a no wake or trolling, the carb bowls are at 150-1 which is fine since the slow motor doesn't need that much oil. the problem is when you get back on the power. the engines jump up but your bowls are lean. over time this wears the motors. i've also heard there are thousands of motors with vro's and thousands with-out still on the job. mine have 500 hrs. on them and seem to run okay..tons of power
