I didnt. I ran it in December. I checked the lower unit for water and all was good. I dont feel guilty one bit! OK...maybe a little bit

I didn't fog the cylinders, but did inspect it and put a good coat of silicon over the engine before parking it.

I wonder why it's recommend? I do mine every year, just for the hell of it.

Outboards generally drain cooling water completly if you store it in the full down position, you fog the cylinders to prevent rust and rings from sticking. You can just remove the plugs, shoot some fogging oil into each cylinder and rotate the engine a few times. Replace the plugs and you are "winterized". Might want to change the lower unit oil and hit all the zerk fittings with some good grease as well.

Admittedly, this year I cheated, too...didn't fog. And this Suzuki has ceramic bores, making that even less of an issue.

Why didn't I fog? Would have had to run the engine and the ground was already super-saturated and a freakin' mess.

Fogging a running engine coats the lower members in the crankcase (rods, crank, and lower portion of the cylinder walls and bottom rings). Top oiling doesn't get all that.

I think those of us who run into December and are back in in spring are not too bad off.

I started my Yammie up last week to fog her for the short month and a half rest, and the dogs had dropped a couple of strategically placed "land mines" right around the lower unit. Little devils...

S.R. Is right on. Fogging does more than just coating the rings and pistons. The entire crankshaft, rod brgs, mains and all moving internal parts get soaked with marine grade oil when you fog. If you dont think its needed take an used engine part youve replaced on your car or engine, brake rotor, water pump, and old set of rings and lay them out on a piece of wood under a cover. See how many days it takes for them to scale up with rust.2 or 3 days max. I have had many outboards and for what the engines cost a $5 can of fog is an easy way to insure it. Most of the newer engines have fittings to screw the fogging can right into. I cant understand why someone wouldnt fog even if it was for 1-2 months. Those of you that dont fog will fire up your engines and it will appear that all is well. That first fire up will take a good bit of material off all rings and brgs. 4 or 5 years of the same start ups is when this adds up to shorter engine life. Sorry gang I dont mean to preach I just hate to have anyone lose an engine for such an easy maintenance issue. I guess im anal about preventive maintenance. What do I know I run diesels.

Capt. Larry - good post. You're right on. It's easy and cheap enough for the protection it gives your engine's mechanics.
