Sunday we had a 2 man full charter of Keith and Jason for a marathon rip and chunk trip. We had over 40 bunker (18 of the freshest I've EVER seen from Rusty at Capt Tates, these bunker were only HOURS old!!) as well as 6 spot and some left over mackeral from our SHORT SEABASS SEASON!
Ok loaded for bear and ready to go at 7am. We were met at the canal with a stiff 20+ Northwesterly against a full moon tide that was still creeping in. Needless to say it was solid 4s with 5s and 1 or 2 6 footers that we launched off of!! After the second one I made the call to turn around. Ok...what to do now 3 options.....call the trip? nah......back to the dock to wait out the wind? nah......Hmmmm...let's try trolling out front. Ok Headed out front and were met with flat conditions, ran north and we marked a TON of bait and fish. Saw 2 bunker boats. Trolled for 2 hours without a touch. got on the radio and talked to Solitare from Uscth's and got a tip...thanks Steve Picked up and ran 10NM down to the rips and set up with some spot....1st 2 drifts nada. Started stemming the rip and WHAMMO.....Jason is on and Keith has a runoff. Keith loses his and Jason boats his a nice 38". Saw a few caught, but it seemed to die pretty quickly. We had 2 other nice bites but they came unglued as well. Oh well, time to go chunk as it was fishable by now. That was until THE CALL......Capt John Staab, who was working with me, got a call from his mother in law that his wife was rushed to the ER with chest pains and a 104 fever. I Immediately pulled the trip, apologized to the guys, and we got back to the dock at 1pm. Washed the boat in 15 mins and we were on our way to the ER by 1:30. I felt very bad for the guys so I only charged them $250 for expenses., would have been alot less if we didn't run so much but we gave it a good shot. Keith was very appreciative and handed me $300. THANKS KEITH I offered to clean the fish but they knew our situation and said they would take care of it, thanks again guys Looks like Capt John's wife will be ok, but not after a tense car ride home with Capt John on his phone most of the time. Glad she's gonna be ok Keith...if you read this.....that discounted marathon trip offer still stands as I do still feel awful for you about getting cut short, but honestly I do not regret making that call. Hope to hear from you soon Capt Dave

Dave,
You are quite welcome for the radio tip , but was more than satisfied with the three tugs I had. Sizes ranged from 32" to 38".You made the right call in running John home early. If I can be of any help to you the next time you're out with the same crew (or any other for that matter), feel free to give me a shout at 856 904-0539 or on 71. Steve (Solitaire)

Who is Solitare?
Are they a Charter Boat. Man he really knows how to find the fish. Most guys out there who are catching fish never tell anyone. That's great he called you in. |

Dave,
Don't blow his head up too big, he'll need a bigger boat. Mike is now telling me how Steve fished by himself, drifted the rips & caught fish by himself. Nice move with John. Tough situation, but a no brainer. Even nicer what you did for your charter w/ the dough. Hopefully decisions like that will pay dividends down the road. |

. I'm surprised they didn't get a Roff's Report .Don't worry, I'm sure that Solitaire guy will call you in also, Tuna, next Sunday as you are impatiently running all over the place trying to find your first suicidal striper of the year . Don't sweat it too much, if you don't find him I'm sure Solitaire will have enough meat to help you out back at the dock . Yeah, that guy fishes stripers all alone and doesn't even use a net to boat 'em . He has pictures and witnesses to prove it . If you were a smart guy you would take some of the advice he has to offer.

Great idea!
I never thought about "CHUM" for the rips. Drag 3-4 buckets of chum behind the boat while drifting the rips, way cool! That's ok, I know where you will be heading once back at the dock this weekend for an "Ice Tea" & this weeks special: Italian Pork, provolone, roasted hots & broccoli rabe. Make sure you clean my fish. |
