Open boat, what does that mean?
I am wanting to learn how to fish striper's in DB (fished striper's, but never in DB chunking) and wanted to get the low down from the pro's. IMO money well spent. Forgive my ignorance, I never chartered a boat before and not familiar with what "open boat" charter means? Like a head boat ? Any recommendations for a skipper, and expected to cost for such adventure? Thanks |

Open boat is a 6 pack boat that is not a charter The captain dictates the price..say $90.00 a head and they go. Somtimes an open boat will head out with less than 6 also. It works good for guys who can't get their own group for a Charter or don't get asked by a group so they can still get out.
You can't go wrong with Adam Bomb, Stalker or Duct Work all Barn Sponsors out of Snug Harbor. I have noticed open boats from $75-$125 per man. |

That pretty much sums it up what missing two said. It is a great way for more experienced fisherman to enjoy a day on the water rather then dealing with all the tangles and hassles of a head boat. It also lets you be upclose a personal with the capt. and the way they fish.

Thanks for the plug. I you want to learn the rips, I could help you there. Chunking the bay isn't my strong point. Just being honest,

So it's basically a private charter for up to 6 people with strangers?
Avg $100 per person= $600 Is that correct? Do they run with less then 6? My buddy and I are thinking of taking our 14 yr old boys. I have seen private charters for $400-$500 In which case we would have less anglers and a private charter... Thanks for your help, Still trying to decide which would be best for us. |

Fished myself at least a few times with each of those three Capts on their open boat trips and have had a great time, have nothing but great things to say, Plus fish for the table and will be going again asap, work (and weather) permitting. I know there are other great Capts out there for sure as well, just these were the ones I fished with most and if your following their reports, they are smacking them! Cost cant be beat, they know their stuff, treat the customers with respect, and again, see their posts, they put you on the fish. Back to your original question posted, IMHO, an open boat is a great way to go if your not 100% sure on your 6 people coming through to make a charter, no worries on anyone backing out. Personal charters are great too, I just have too much going on with work and like the open boats myself. Make a followup post how you make out, dont forget the camera! Best

Thanks to all who responded and sent e-mails to help me understand the whole "open boat" thing.
I'm still waiting to pin my buddy down on a date and with both our boys still playing football, scheduling is tough. I might be leaving ALL of them at the dock and jumping on board with one of you guys !!! ![]() Thanks again |
