getting parts for a 50 yr old motor might be a problem
No sweat on parts for those horses... Barnacle Bill, Joe has waterpumps and thermostats on the shelf for them..back to 54'.. I can get parts for my 1949 22.5hp Speeditwin and 1949 50hp Big Four Stormboat engine just as easy... Check out http://www.aomci.org/ One of the members redid my gearcases for those engines with new seals so I can use regular gearcase lube oil instead of Lubriplate 105 grease.. Nasty grizzly old engines with open flywheels and fuel tanks on top that run on a 16 to 1 oil/fuel mix... Getting my back fixed in Dec, I'm getting back into running those old devils...

I just need to find a boat to run my old engines on.. I should have never traded the 16ft Alum Jonboat for the 14ft Carolina Skiff. The CS was just too heavy.. In the spring I'm going be looking for another alum 16ft Jonboat.. I've got a mint 56' 10hp Johnson I want to get running.. A 1950 7.5hp Evinrude Fleetwin that only weighs 34lbs.. Got a 48' 2.5hp Ranger that weighs about 25lbs.. Might use them as kickers on this flats boats I have.. Need to clean out my work shed so I can actually work in it..

Hey guys thanks for the tips so far. I tinkered with the motor last night and the inline fuse to the solenoid was blown. I replaced that fuse but still nothing, so I'm assuming there is a short or something in the soleinoid which caused the fuse to blow.

I also hooked up jumper cables direct to the starter and the starter spun and engaged the fly wheel, so I know thats not the problem.

I'm really enjoying working on this small boat and motor. Maybe bigger isn't always better.

Do you still have the blown 50? You can swap out the solenoids and see if that solves your problem.

Yeah I looked into that last night, and took the solenoid off of the 50. They are different sizes and have different mounting brackets, so it didn't work out.

You are right, the two motors use the same controls. What threw me for a loop was the plug is not red on the 35. However, the two sets match up. I temperaly switched out the 35 for the 50 last night just to make sure there wasn't an issue in the control harness, or my newly installed ingnition key. There wasn't so one by one I'm knocking things off the list.

If you can grab the model number off the motor...we can give you a year on it. I also have a manual that covers all the old OMC motors if you have any questions or need electrical diagrams...

Take a picture of the solenoid you need and send it to me. I have a few floating around. I am not sure why yours are different though. I think my 1968 33HP used the same one that my 1997 40 HP and the same as the late 80s 88-115s. At least in my mind they all look the same You should be able to use the one of your 50 if you wanna be creative too.

So I finally caved and took the motor into my mechanic. I’ve found a mechanic down here that I really like and trust a lot. Turns out there were numerous bad connections in the wiring on the motor side where some one had spliced into things previously. My mechanic changed over all of the controls and corresponding wiring from my old 50 to the newer 35 hp and only charged me an hours worth of labor. Now everything works great. Hopefully I can test out the boat for the first time this weekend.
