Had the day off, so I went fishing at IBSP.
The full moon tide was extremely high early in the morning, and with big surf, was pretty tough to fish. During the last of the outgoing, I hooked, but then lost, a big bass nearly right at my feet on a Yank’s Assassin. About an hour before dark on the incoming, I caught about a 20 incher on a large white deceiver. Expected more action then, but nothing. Several others on the beach were seeing fish. All bass. Water was a little dirty. There were lots of turns dipping a couple hundred yards out. Put in a good 12 hours, thought I would have caught more. Beautiful day though. The fish are there. |

nice job on your limited success the other day, however if you had an assassin on instead of a deciever that fish might have been 20 lbs not inches ![]() ![]()

1/0 and 3/0 and fish it with confidence it is never the wrong fly and most of the time it has been the RIGHT fly. pinch the barbs they come out of your ear easier.

Congrats ZAP. Keep putting in your time. I'm curious, how'd you loose the one fish? Come unbuttoned? Break him off? You're not using Mustads are you?

The fish came unbuttoned. He hit a 3/0 assassin that you gave me, so the hook was good. I ticked it on some rocks, but it still seemed very sharp. The fish took the fly close to me, with all the line in the basket. I cleared line as he ran. I lost him when I tried to reel up the remaining line in the basket and get him on the reel. I lightened up the pressure a little, and he threw the hook. Hard to do two things at once I guess. The guy next to me said not to worry about getting him on the reel. Said if the fish is strong enough, it will take out all the line anyway, so not sense worrying about fighting the fish from the reel. I was useing 20# floro leader. |

Fredrick, I would go to IBSP. But it does look to be very windy on Friday.

another thing, if possible, is to back up while trying to get a fish on the reel. No slack can ever be given as you can never be sure where the hook is. I lost my biggest to date on the fly because of doing something similar to you. In my case, I was able to see the fish (and touch the leader so I guess I can count it as a 'catch' right *LOL*) but it got off, gave me the middle flipper and swam away

He was right. While it's always nice to get the fish on the reel, it's not always possible or recomended. It's far more important to keep tension on the fish. Always keep the line tight. As far as doing two things at once, me and Fred have trained ourselves to be able to hook, land and release a fish at the same time we're eating a hoagie, drinking a beer and taking a leak. It's advanced angling. That why you have two feet. Use them.
It is always wise to sharpen a hook now and then. I like the ceramic hook hone fron Umpqua. Oh, in a pitching boat, it's always best to not use the same hand to eat your hoagie and take that leak. |

Always tough to lose a fish when there are not many hits. Good advice about fighting the fish with line in your hand. I have seen too many fish lost as guys try to get line to the reel, I did it way too many times myself when I first started fly fishing. Let the fish tell you if it wants to go to the reel as it will happen fast. Just have to makes sure there are no tangles in the line.
I may have to take a land trip up there. IBSP has great deep pockets along the beach for bait and bass to roam. From what I keep hearing that is where the best action has been. Guys are catching nice bass down here but it is mainly, chunking or using live bait fished deep on the bottom in the deeper waters or rips. Makes it tough to catch them on the fly as there is very little bait for them to go after along the beach or shallow waters and it seems like we have 1 foot of visibility in the inlet and along the beach forever.

i think everyone has been there and with that being said you could have done everything right and still lost the fish, it happens.
the advise dispensed so far is right on target. one more point (no pun intended) is to reset the hook. many times with all that goes on in a surf hook up you don't get a solid hook set, so when i get the hook up and get control of my line I'll hit them again with a hook set to make sure i sink it deep.
