My friend... these guys aren't getting "personal" by quoting you or responding to your post directly. They are talking about the topic of the post- and just because they disagree with you doesn't mean they have to "take it to email." Otherwise, why post

Smoking doggies? How do you get the meat in the rolling paper?

I've been fishing for a few decades and have never ever caught as many as I have in the last few years. They are a problem and something needs to be done with them.

They are protected in so far as they are closed commercially. The commercial fishery for them is what kept them in check. Now, without the commercial pressure, they're populations have exploded to epic levels. I don't condone killing them for no reason, but they need to be fished heavily to thin the herd. Simultaneously, people will be catching dogs in the Delaware Bay while drum fishing, dogs on nearly every wreck in the area, and in the canyon while tile fishing in well over 500 feet of water. Ever reel double header dogs in from 700 feet? That's enough to make you want to kill something or some body. When the same species of fish is populating areas from inland bays to the canyons UP AND DOWN THE COAST at the same time, there is a problem. The large numbers of dogfish absolutely increase predation mortality, especially among groundfish and bottomfish. There is no doubt about it.

If they're not protected, and they are large ones, why complain, just start catching them and eating them. Once you find out how delicious they are fried like filets of flounder, you won't be complaining any longer. I started eating them in 1970. The reason they were over fished commercially, is because the British use them for "fish & chips"

Yes, I have reeled up double dogs from 700'! On my most recent excursion we could not drift the same spot twice. As the deep water target species (Tile & Seabass) disgorge themselves from the depths the dogs follow them and a second drift would produce nothing but dogs. I started out the day politely releasing them, that didn't last too long. It costs the captains fuel and time to have to keep moving, as well as frustration for us fares.
As far as a dogfish tournament; the boat with the most doggies wins! (By any means)

What are their natural predators? What was mother nature's plan to keep them in check without commercial fishing? Before there was commercial fishing to keep them in check, there must have been a reason for balance?

Could it be we need to bring the population of some other species up instead of lowering the other?
