I was on the Miss Chris on sunday and witnessed the event 1st hand, out of the 50 boats that were out there that day only 2 boats responded, pretty sad...
At least the captian had channel 16 on (i found out later)and was paying attention, seems like EVERYONE out there is to worried about what ripp they are going to go thru when maybe they should be more concerned about SAFTY and looking out for each other.Hats of to the captian of the MissChris for being aware, and being willing to aid in assistance when needed...it says alot!!!

I'm realatively new to the area, and haven't experienced the fall Striper run, but I am wondering if this many boats going down is a usual occurance during fall Striper in this area. And this could be a dumb question, but what is sinking these boats, is it water coming over the stern while drifting. Please advise.

If you have a VHF you MUST monitor CH 16 by law and you must aid and assist if possible !
Glad everyone is safe ! |

My wife works at the local hospital and over the years most of the anglers that had problems in the Rips were taken there with cold related injuries. I do not remember any fatalities thank god but it has happened time and time again mostly in the fall. Even a few charter captains I know ate it in the Rips and they knew what they were doing and you can put me in that category years ago when my wife and I used to bucktail Prissy Wick all the time on a 20 foot boat. We took one monster wave as we got too close to the high spot and it almost swamped us and scared the heck out of us. It was a drop dead calm fall day and the wave came out of nowhere and almost got us. Watch those days with tide against the wind. We were dumb and reckless back then and had gotten cocky and disregarded how dangerous the big rip can be on a small boat and almost paid the price for it. After we started fishing larger boats I could not count the times I put my keel into the sand trying to get as close to the high spots as possible but at least on a big boat it can take the waves as long as you keep your bow into them but still not a lot of fun.
If the big rip is nasty do not push it and try some of the other Rips that are less hazardous such as the far end of the big Rip, North Shoal, Middle or Overfalls as they do not create waves not quite as nasty as the shallows of the big rip. That is what we used to do years ago when running small boats but Overfalls can also get bad when the winds is howling so beware and respect the Delaware Bay both in the spring and fall as she does have one nasty side as most of you know. No striper is worth capsizing for. Back when we used to have those big stripers in late May and early June on the Rips it was always fun fishing them at night but we mostly stayed away from the big Rip but on occasion we did fish it in pitch black conditions and having a good plotter with track lines was the key. It was scary hearing the sounds of the rips but not being able to see anything until you were right on top of it on those dark nights. You just have to respect the Rips no matter what size boat you fish on and there is no shortcut but they sure can provide some great action on stripers when they are hot and I think the next few days should see some banner catches with the hard running full moon tides but think safety first.

As mentioned above we sure seem to be invincible when we are young. Keep an eye on the moon phases. That tide gets moving and those rips get nasty with all the water rolling over those bars.
Out of curiosity compare your drift speed during a full moon tide and a trip this coming weekend. |

I guess you would be since you work for sea tow. As I said, the radio was turned down at the time. I don't think I have to explain myself to much more!
