Potential World Record Eel

Steven Carmen caught this 13.1 lb, 50 inch eel on the beach which was weighed in here at Absecon Bay Sportsman Center. He is currently doing paperwork to have classified by the IGFA as a world record. the current All Tackle Record as listed in the 2007 book is 9lb 4 ounces.

There are a lot of congers caught around structure this time of year and they get very big. That's a big American eel if it actually is one though.

This eel has no teeth and while I actually didn't see it , Ray my main man here did and he has seen thousands of eels including lots of congers while wreck fishing.

Steve will be contacting state biologists today. Ray also didn't take as many pictures as I would have, but there are a couple more closer pictures on the web site.

From the picture, the lower part of the jaw seems to be longer than the top jaw which is characteristic of an American eel. The top part of the jaw on the conger eel over laps the bottom part of the jaw. However, the dorsal fin seems to be a lot closer to the head which could be conger. need to see better angle.

its hard to tell from the picture, i would think if it was an american eel if would still be alive, the conger eels die pretty quick when they are out of water, it looks very grey, usually american eels are darker unless its been dead for a long time
