Question

Has anyone been to Punta Cana and is the fishing any good? Planning a trip in either late Feb or early March

JR,

I've been to Punta Cana. Stayed at Sunscape Resort with the family in March of '02. Had a great time but did not fish. There are plenty of charter opportunities on the Island. Most likely your hotel will gladly hook you up. I saw little opportunity to surf fish while there. Not to say you can't somewhere, but I didn't see anyone fishing from the beach, as all the property near the Sunscape was Resort property. I did see a local do some spear fishing. He had a nice catch coming in one day - a mixed bag of reef fish. He did not speak English and as my Spanish is not the greatest, I really didn't learn much. I can remember researching the surf fishing question before I went and found almost no info. I didn't really find any more info while I was there.

No matter, still had a great time hanging with the family and soaking up the sun. Have fun.

- Andy

Never been there but found this on the web

In this region, big game fishing is unsurpassed and tournaments draw international participants in the summer. You can look forward to catching blue marlin, barracuda, and dorado among others. Best fishing is in the summer. Arrangements can be made at hotel front desks or at the Cabeza de Toro Yacht Club or Punta Cana Marina for a full day or half day of fishing.

My neighbor was just there. He chartered a boat and they went out in 12 foot seas. Caught a barracuda and a dolphin and his wife puked the whole time.

I was there at the end of September. I stayed at the sunscape resort. very nice and the treat you very good there to. I went fishng on a four hour trip but we didn't catch anything but we did have a baracudda(SP) on but the hook pulled right away. They had five dolphin in the box from there moring trip. I think I will go again to go strickly fishing next time but it will be in April or May they say thats the best time. The good thing is that your only a couple of minutes from the fishing grounds. Good luck.

Oh yeah just for a little more info. I wouldn't eat the fish there. I went in the afternoon trip and didn't boat anything but like I said before they got 5 dolphin that morning. They were nice ones 15-20 pounds. They had them in the box since the morning with no ice when I ask them what they do with them they said sell them to the restraunts. These fish were in the box for a good 6-8 hours with no ice in 80 degree weather. And don't drink the water Hope you have a good trip.
