Question

Seems we have a few topics running about livebait, so I thought I would throw something else out there. I want to change my current airation systems to pure O2 this season, but have a few concerns. In particular, is a placard needed to carry oxygen tanks. Divers may also be able to answer this question, although they aren't carrying pure O2. I don't know if it is regulated by tank size or whether it costs money to aquire a placard. Anyone else running pure O2 that knows the answer????

I think a dive shop may be a good place to go and ask some questions. Deep divers use pure 02 to speed up and / or provide a greater safety margin for decompression at 15'. Deeper, and the higher partial pressure of pure 02 is toxic.

Divers mix it with air to form Nitrox I and II, which can be used to extend no-deco limits at depths of 80-130 fsw

Another thought; try a welding supply house for a pure 02 source. Its going to be much cheaper than human-grade oxygen

Thanks Billy, I had already figured on using welding O2. I suppose either place may be able to answer questions about the need for placards while carrying it in your vehicle.

Fish,

I belive when you run pure O2, you only run it only a couple munutes prior to livelining the fish. I wish I could comment on this a bit more, but just seen this on T.V. before. I believe it was SWS.

I'll tell you what.....from what I've seen, giving them O2 is like sticking an energizer battery in em' .

You may want to give the offshore forum a holler about this one.

Fishaholic,

I work for the local Caterpillar dealer and our trucks carry Oxygen cylinders every day. You do not need a placard unless you carry more than 1000 pounds of oxygen on your vehicle. Just make sure the cylinder has a DOT label identifying the contents as oxygen.

nrgizer902, I would actually run it the whole time. O2 is common place for many tournament anglers for both bait and fish. I am sure you have seen Kingfish tournaments with the boats with three motors rigged to the hilt. Many of those guy run pure O2 in their livewells as live bait is key to their success. Bass tournament anglers use O2 as it reduces stress on the fish, and as you know, they loose points and money for any dead fish. In Depth, without getting into too many details, my above explanation pretty much explains why I want to change. When collecting bait like herring or adult bunker, I am often running them quite a distance from where I catch them to where my pens are. Although the pumps I run now work fine with almost no loss, I believe the O2 will aid in that low mortality, and my hope is that it will increase longevity in the penned baits. Feel free to shoot me an email if you want more specifics.

Check out the library I read something about this in an old copy of Salt water fisherman. They didn't talk about needing any placards and I think you aren't carrying enough O2 were you would need one. Where ever you get it from will have the answer for you. As a matter of fact if you need it they are legally obligated to tell you to put one on your car. If you need one you probably wouldn't be allowed to carry it in you car.

Logic186, Thank You! That makes quite a bit of sense. I am sure your guys have cards for the offroad fuel tanks though. Thanks for the heads up! My company does a lot of purchasing and rental with CAT.

Just what I needed, another expensive toy. Sounds like a good idea. I fish Raystown lake in the spring and fall. Pure O2 would help me keep my alewives and gizzard shad alive.

I've been playing with live bait quite a bit and have done a little studying and since my dinner depends on it it is really a difficult call.

O2 difinately works, but so do air pumps and the Keep Alive infuser systems. There is a limit as to how much oxygen any water can hold and many variables. Depth, Temperature and size of bubbles are just a few. Your delivery system is very important. If you aren't ready to go the whole route to testing and carefully calculating how much O2 you need you are probably better off just running a large amount of air into your bait.

For short term catching or going fishing I don't think you can beat the Keep Alive System. For my big bait tanks I use big air pumps with big air stones.

Waiting impatiently for the full moon in April.

I only hope I'm allowed to catch a few,

Herring that is.
