Improving The Recreational Reef Fishery..

Here in NJ, we are fortunate to have an extensive network of reef sites located from Sandy Hook to Cape May.  Since 1984, the Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish and Wildlife play a crucial part in developing this network of reef sites that so many of us enjoy today. In 1991, the Artificial Reef Association was created by a group of local party and charter boat captains and marina owners. Since it's inception, the ARA has provided funds to sink 108 vessels on our local reef sites. The Artificial Reef Program depends on groups such as ours to sponsor the sinking of vessels.

We at the Bass Barn have a unique opportunity to contribute to the success of the Artificial Reef program by sponsoring our very own reef structures. We started out with a "bang" back on September 5th, 2002. when, with the help of the Ann E. Clark foundation, we sunk our very own barge, aka "ManTank" on the Deepwater reef site DGPS coordinates 3858.688  7411.410.

Less then one year after the creation of "TheBassBarn.com Artificial Reef" on September. 5th, 2002. we followed up with the deployment of concrete pipe on the Wildwood Reef site. Our barge full of concrete pipe was sunk on May 9th, 2003.

Just six months after our concrete pipe hit the ocean's floor, we focused our attention on the Little Egg Reef site by sinking Reef Balls.

In recognition for the friends we lost over the years, we added the "Fallen Friends" wreck to the Wildwood reef site on August 23rd, 2004.

We then put an end to the 2004 reef building with and addition to the Great Egg reef site on November 16th, 2004 with the addition of artificial reef balls.

Our goal is to continue making contributions to New Jersey's artificial reef program in an effort to do our part in helping to improve our marine environment. Of course, we also want to catch a few fish while were at itsmile.gif (93 bytes)
