I decided to give this thread a bump. I take my 8 and 3 year old to penny pack all the time to fish for sunnies, mainly around the stage area. I live just a few blocks away on Teesdale st and enjoy the time spent hear 100 times more than any other area. Like Fred said it's more than just the fish, it's special. (I’ll be stopping by no bones next weekend looking for some insight into the secret salamander spot!)
People walking the trails are always friendly, kids are being kids and the scenery can not be beat for inside the city limits. Sure it has some problems but I really cherish the moments I have with the boys there. The more time I spend on the creek the broader the species I come across.
To Date I have caught sunnies in all colors and sizes, smb up to 9 in, eel, trout, rock bass. I have seen the big suckers and carp but yet to hook into one. I’m gonna need to put in some more time.
Keeping this post Thread alive for a couple reasons...
1. I was able to hook into a 15 inch small mouth today (Personal Best in the Creek)
2. This water way needs some love. Every day I fish the creek I clean up at least 1 full bag of trash. It is a mix of the teenagers leaving beer cans and anglers fishing by product. Based on this tread this creek mean a lot too many we want it to remain that way.
For any Barn Member that resides in the Philadelphia area who would be interested in helping me co-ordinate a Clean up day please respond to this message.
Hit the creek tonight for an hour to kill the time. There were kids jumping off the bridge and being crazy. I decided to ignore them and wet a line. I set a clean hook on a 3 foot eel that fought like a SMB! Thankfully it was able to unhook itself so I didn't need to touch it.
Next fish was a nice Brown Bullhead (about 12 inches)! First time catching one of these for me. Some guy watching ran down and asked if I would give it to him. I said absolutely not and threw it back. Caught one more bullhead before calling it a night.
Hitting the Big "D" tomorrow morning in search of some bigger cats!
a little off the subject but it was possible back in the late 80's to drive your car at night from the spot off rhawn below where people sled in the winter thru the woods and come out on the road where the father judge kids wait for the bus, that is what i heard
Just bumping this
i started this thread more than two years ago in my search for nice pennypack smallmouth. Since then I have learned a lot and explored new areas of the creek in my quest. I now regularly catch smallmouth up to 15inches and two nights ago I hit a milestone with my first fish confirmed at 16inches. This fish was caught In The city In a commonly fished area.
Tonight I went out and caught the other type of bass my pennypack record at 15inches long. So far it's been a wonderful journey mastering the pennypack and hopefully there is more big bass in the future
