Arrow Renegade Sportfishing - January 2nd - Trophy Bass Report - As Good As It Gets - Again

On Monday, January 2, Renegade Sportfishing hosted another open boat bass trip. We took the 20 mile ride south back to Barnegat Inlet arriving at first light to only find dirty water and a few surf anglers pulling some shorts.

Looked around for the next 3 hours covering 60+ miles, finally found the jackpot of large bass right off the beach migrating south and feeding hard on adult herring. Large gannets and sea gulls diving for miles. Herring being tail slaped like the spring bunker run. Largest school of bass I have seen in a very long time. Hopefully Nick can post the video. Wind was cranking at 30-35 knots all day which is what they wanted.

The crew were locked up for hours using the new Ultra Large Jersey Jay Krocs, plain silver, white was not as good. The 9" tsunami shads were also deadly. Easily boated and released 80 + bass up to 40 pounds and left them biting at 1pm. Geno even called at 4pm to report the bite is still on without a boat in site. The entire crew kept 8 smaller fish for the table and released all the larger fish which are all full or roe. Interesting to note even the smaller bass are ripe to spawn.

Open boat daily, only $120pp - call 732-718-8339 to reserve - obviously it's far from over. Please see the open boat thread for full trip details.

WOW !!! I thought it had to be over based on the recent smaller fish and colder temps,

Great to see - excellent pics of the winter ocean and fish on !!

    Great job.
It looks like you found them back up north of BI? I have to take my boat back down to Margate in the next two days. Will have to keep a look out.

Tomkat, they came up off Belmar and pushed back south to Manasquan quickly, in close to the beach, 45 feet of water. Super clean fish. Long day today, we actually fished 3 different inlets. Can't wait to see the diesel bill tmw. Photo is 1/100th of the actual bird play, cell phone camera is not the best:

Oh man, I brought the boat home on Saturday and winterized it on Sunday. Oh well always spring. I figured this cold snap this week and the wind would push them out.

    Mike,

I was surfing this afternoon off seagirt and saw the massive pod of Bass and birds - You were in by that time and there was not a boat in sight but man was it fun the watch from the water. Explosions everywhere and the birds streatched for well over a mile.

Gene, that's the truth, at one point we needed hard hats, the gannets could care less about the boat and were dive bombing 360 degrees 10 feet from the freeboard, I couldn't move if I wanted, they sounded like missiles. Very aggressive, but not as bad as last weeks brown pelicans. Still can't believe pelicans would be up here this time of year, what the hell is going on?

    Gene,

You are supposed to be fishing not surfing. Happy New Year.

Hey Mike, you are an ANIMAL!!!!
i have been following your reports in late December since I am out of the water and winterzied. i had intentions of jumping on one of your trips over the holidays, but threw my back out just before Xmas. I am till in pain. I was lookig forward to jumping on your boat for sentimental reasons since the Topaz is gone.
    Keep at it.
    Thanks
    Mike.
