great news on the weakies now if they could avoid the netters and get a chance to spawn it might be the start of something good

    Fishing In Tough Conditions

Don't know what is going on but the weakfishing action is hotter than the striper action. I don't know what to make of it but I will take it.

Had spin charter out Saturday night. A father, his 12 year old son and a uncle. The wind did not co-operate. We had a strong south-east wind blowing when we left the dock a 5:00 pm and we still had an hour of out-going tide. We went out side the inlet and found conditions tough at best with the wind and wave activity, but decided to give it a shot.

Found weakfish and bluefish activity but it was hard standing in the boat and the wind was pushing us along faster than I would of liked. We made four drifts and caught fish on each drift and 12 year old got the best fish of the night, landing a 25 inch weakfish. We kept it as it was a male and hooked in the gills and bleeding bad. Also kept 4 of the blues for dinner.

Would of continued to fish the area the rest of the night but the two adults were feeling a little green so we had to leave the fish and try inside where it was calmer.

Did hook one really large striper next to the boat that looked to be in the 30 lb plus size but in haste to set the hook the angler looped the eye with the line and snapped it off on the hook set.. It all happen so fast.

When we had enough water in the back bay we worked back there and they missed three fish that hit popping plugs, trying to set the hook when they saw the fish instead of when they felt the weight of the fish.

Not the best fishing conditions, but they had a good time and it was the biggest fish the young angler had ever caught.

Nice going Ray. I remember back in the day, Lou Rodia a local sports writer would host an Eastern Writers association week-end & he kidnapped some members of the local club "Swalt Water Flyrodders of America" to supply rides & "local" Knowledge. I had one for 2 years that left me with mixed emotions after all these years. Mark Sosin & yes we did catch a fish or three.

Banana Curse or a change of Luck?

Had a fly angler out this afternoon who was doing a story on fly fishing in Cape May for Eastern Fly Fishing magazine. I wanted to leave late afternoon and fish till dark but his schedule would only allow for a mid-day trip.

We left the dock at 1:00 pm with the tide starting to go out. Water was very clean but the early afternoon high was a very low tide and had very little current flow. He brought his wife along and she was eating a banana. I am not a believer in the curse, but the first hour and a half he didn't have a single hit and his wife was feeling a little motion sickness so I dropped her back at the dock and we headed out again. The peel was off the boat and the banana insider her was off the boat.

When I started him back fishing, he invited me to cast along with him to see if we might do a little better with two lines in the water. As luck would have it I got small bass and the skunk was gone.

I decided to work the same area that we worked before without any hits as we had been getting fish there the last few days. The strategy paid off and we started picking at blues and weakfish and right around 4:00pm when he had to get back in for dinner the bite picked up.

We were only out 3 hours but managed 7 weakies the one bass and a good number of bluefish. All fish were released and they were all caught on clousers in various colors with the weakies being 16 to 19 inches. Was it a case of no bananas on board or just the right place at a better time? Hard to say. Told him that might make a good story line.

We both had a fun afternoon, he took a good number of pictures and said he had enough information for his article. It will probably come out some time this winter.

Took another friend out fly fishing tonight. We had another night of good steady fishing but only a few weakfish and they were 15 to 18 inches in size. Did get a mess of blues and friend keep 4 nice ones for dinner. Also got a good number sea herring.

Clousers, deceivers and jiggies all caugtht fish on sinking lines and the blues destroyed a good number of flies.

Just like last night no signs of any baitfish or bird activity and we didn't not get a single striper. It was a beautiful evening and we had fun during the 2 1/2 hours that we fished. No pictures tonight, was waiting for a decent fish.

Alright Ray! Nice to see you on some fish. Hey good looking weaks, at least they are not extinct in your neck of the woods like you thought.

Who knows, with the way the season is stacking up for you, there might be a sailfish in your future, keep your eyes peeled

Now that'd be a hoot on the 9wt.
