Just finished reading it... What a night! I felt like I was standing next to him through the entire article.

I remember reading an article that he is writing a book called "The night I caught the Devil".

Kudos to Al McReynolds for the "Field of dreams" of fishing.

Got my issue today, great story. If everything written is true, Al deserved every ounce of that fish. A story like Al's is what keeps all of us out on the water (even during those cold winter nights). I believe that record will stand for another 20 years, but we all have to keep trying.
Let's hope it's not broken by a rookie bunker chunker!

I'm looking forward to next month's issue.

Just read the first installment at work tonight.
You're right Rottn, I was thinking the same thing. It's like your watching the battle firsthand.

Great article just read it with the morning cup-o-joe.

The size thing is great, but whether the fish is 78.8 or 7.8, a 4+hour fight or 4 min fight, I think we can all relate to the range on emotions that one goes through when lading a fish, especially in the surf.

It is a great example to show people why we fish, for the emotion of the experience!

What I find interesting is that its now been
22 years since a Striper that size has been caught
by Hook & Line....They have to be out there,Right?
Or was this just a Freak of Nature ?
You would think with todays tackle and equipment
its possible to land such a beast, especially in
deeper water by boat....
I can now understand how this fish was caught
on light line and a Rapala off a Jetty with
one treble buried in its eye and the other in
the corner of the mouth.-Makes sense when Al
states the Fish seemed to Run then Stop,Run again
then Stop Completely. Its Eyeball was being yanked
out of its socket...For sure all the stars were
alined that Sept.Night..
And You would hope it happens again one night,
maybe sooner then you think......

Strikes:

Just gave it a read too.
Almost unimaginable thinking of a 70 plus pound fish.
Sounds like it was a good thing Al's friend was there tp yank him out of the water, but also to keep him calm and talk him through it.

Can't wait until next month- It'll be just in time.

Thanks for the heads up Nightstrikes - read it this morning on the train on the way to work and felt like I was out there with him that night. The story was very well written and love the part at the end where he was tempted to go out and make a couple more casts after that beast almost drowned him in the surf

I could only imagine the look on their faces when that baby came up in the wash.... Cant wait to read part II.

I just read it a second time (since the Eagles look so bad) and I have to admit I read it full of envy. Again, a great read.
