I have a 1983 (I believe) 115hp johnson ob. I would like to change the lower unit oil. The manual I have says to open the drain plug and the vent plug. There's only one screw in the side of the unit. The guy I bought it from said he neverr changed it and all was fine. Should I worry about changing it and if so how do I do it? Some advice please.

I'd change it every year before it gets winterized to see if there's any water in it.. And there has to be a vent plug for it. Has it been painted over since the other guy never did it?

You should always check or change your gearoil when you are done with it for the season just in case seal issue and picked up some water in the gearcase it can freeze and crack or the water can cause the bearings and machined parts to rust . Your vent is located on the top of the gear housing and the drain is located at the bottom.
