Hey Adam,

This new New Jersey "registration" reg for fishing..... Does it apply to people going out on charters, or just a specific group of fishermen? Should everyone apply or does it not apply to charter fishing (or the same style fishing that you do with our own boats).

I don't know enough about it.

Thanks!

Wardman,

I am guessing that you're talking about NOAA's saltwater registry. When fishing on a charter or party boat, you do NOT need to be registered as long as the boat possesses ALL of the required federal permits(not just tuna - fluke, sea bass, blackfish, ling, etc. all require federal permits for for hire vessels) and proper documentation. However, if you fish on a private boat you DO need to be registered. You would also need to be registered if you do any amount of surf fishing. It is for this reason that I am registered, despite running a charter boat. If I ever do some surf fishing, I need to be registered.

Some people have suggested that private boats in possession of a HMS permit don't need to have their anglers registered. I believe this is incorrect. If you're a private boat, you need all anglers registered.

Hope this helps.
