This is just the report from one day...a lot of big fish dying...at least 5 people released some big fish

It is sad to see all those fish dying. I did notice that they are all different people so one can only hope that they only kept one. Im sure we all have our own ideas as to how to help the fishery but the charters are at the mercy of there clients. Example would be for the boat to have a one per man rule and all other fish be released. Whos boat do you think the greedy fisherman would support if the boat in the next silp allowed all clients to take there limits. Its a very hard thing to regulate I can only hope there will be fish around for my sons. TJ

The real problem with all the fish being killed down there is that they are not legal fish. For some reason, the fact that a great deal of the fish caught down there are caught well outside of the 3 mile line, is just ignored. Charters as well as recreational boats travel up to 12 miles offshore when the water is too cold for them to come inshore. This is a fact and everyone just seems to turn there back on it down there. I do not like to be a rat but the charter boats that follow the laws take a beating at the dock when not much is going on inshore. Your returning to the dock empty handed and all the boats from the fleet that headed offshore are coming in with garbage cans full of bass. There will always be a debate between catch and release vs keeping your limit. However these boats are keeping a ton of fish that are not within there rights of keeping.

Those are just the big fish being reported...most of the boats down there keep trolling until they limit out...check out the website and see all the fish hanging

Check out yesterdays report. A lot of catch and release. I was down there there in mid December and watched all the charters and private boats go right by me. I got curious and followed them 10 miles out and they were still going.

There also has been a lot of chatter of increased inforcment, hence the increase in c&r reports.

Check out the reports of the Mars tournament compared to the non entries. The entries had GPS sensors so they could not stray.

While we certainly catch and kill our share of big bass in the DE Bay spring and fall, it pales in comparison to the beating they take down there. Remember, every fish from the migratory bass population is down there wintering over. They troll heavy wire line gear and don't stop the boat until limits are taken. Lucky Stripers already alluded to the fact that much of that is done offshore. Look at photos from one marina...limits of 20 to 50 pounders for nearly every boat trolling. I don't know of too many marinas in the Northeast during the rest of the season that see that kind of damage day in and out.

*STRIPER REGULATIONS POLL*

Currently there is a possible proposition to allow an extension along the Virginia territorial water limit from 3 miles out (from the coast line) to 12 miles out (from the coast line) during Striper season. This would allow catches of Striped Bass to be legal within 12 miles of the coast line.
This has not been passed yet, however this information will be shown when the meeting is held to aide in their decision of extending or not extending the territorial limit.
The current Atlantic Ocean limit in Virginia is 2 Striper per person, each fish must be 28" or over, and all fish must be caught within the 3 mile limit from the Virginia coast line. Please choose which option you agree with.​

I was down there a couple weeks ago. We were catching and releasing beyond 3 miles. I honestly see no problem catch and releasing in the EEZ All of a sudden the entire fleet starts racing inshore. Of course the coast guard was coming and most of the other boats had close to their limit. We didnt keep any so we didnt race in.

I just don't understand how people can take and take all the time and never wonder what they are doing to the population and resource. Wouldn't most people rather have unreal fishing all the time and keep a couple a year. Rather than run the resource into the ground and look for another species when they are gone :huh:.

We don't see that many reported out of LEI in an entire year.

I saw MANY of guys/boats/reports etc of boats limiting out up here with fish to 40# regulary this fall...it was a great run...I mean we're pointing fingers but in all reality...we rape as much as we can (legally) and don't bat an eye because "we're aloud to it's legal"....

I aggree that catching those fish and killingthem isn't great...but then again maybe it was their personal bests...etc etc...

I took a 42" 30# striper this year, and a few 28-32"ers.....the 42" only because it was the biggest I've ever caught...I can say that if I catch that again it's going back in the drink...I will keep one if it's bigger maybe...or just get measurements for a mount...

Many (big bass) 50lb fish get killed in Jersey every year when we have "our" shot.
From chunkers in the Del. bay to bunker snaggers up North.
I'm sure there are Virginia guys who complain when there are reports of 50 and 60lb fish killed down our way.

Most of you know the size of the fleets that are out when the bite is hot.

You know, there are guys who don't give reports on the internet.


I'm still working on catching my 50.

I tagged and released a 48" bass in June and it was re-caught and kept 2 months later in Massachusetts. At least I tried!

I am very happy to see you young guns trying to do what you can to preserve this great fishery!!!! BUT do you remember when WE the little older folks had and did BUY the metal tags for TROPHY bass--Yes we did c&r with those tags--Just asking--beat me up I wll be here--:fighting:

And yes trolling is good--But what does that have to do with Right And Wrong??
