It's cold and windy. Docks and deck are still covered with ice and snow. It looks like we are about a billion years away from fishing, but.
Pulled one of the drop nets. No bait, just sitting on the bottom. Felt like it could collapse under the weight. Figured the storm pushed something into the net. Happens once in a while. Not this time. The entire net was filled with grass shrimp. It was sagging in the middle and all four arms of the net looked ready to just snap. Had to be about two gallons of shrimp in it. Most I have ever seen. No minnows just shrimp.
Sitting here in the late afternoon and it felt so nice. Sun is at a great angle and now it reflects off the water and bounces right into the shop. Feels great on the face and just warms the entire building. Great place to sit and relax. It's a mellow time. No ice on the water and lots of ducks and cormorants hanging around. Watching one cormorant go down and I ran out the door while it was under. It came up about thirty seconds later with a fish about six inches long in it's mouth. The fish was brown and shaped like a ling. Not an oyster cracker. Cormorant saw me right away and turned to swim off. It kept shaking it's head to stun the fish for easier swallowing and finally picked it's head up high and the fish was no more.
There are three cormorants that hang here daily and the only reason is because there must be enough food to support them. Now I'm curious so I think that this week I will get my little fish little hook rig out and bait up with some clam. Toss it out in the morning and let it lay. See if whatever the cormorants are feeding on are maybe a little hungry.
Just think. in 27 days we turn our clocks up. Then the sun won't set until after 7pm. That means it won't get dark until about 7:45. Lots of time and daylight to do lots of stuff ater work. Happy days will soon be here again.
