My 3 year old daugther has a fishing pool that I would like her to play around with in the surf. ( Supervised of course, my wife or I will be right with her. ) Is there a hook that exists that can catch fish, that isn't really a hook? ( I.e. something that is impossible for my daugther to get hurt with. )

Thanks.

How about a ball of chewing gum on a string? :D

Or some velcro with a worm attached in the middle??

Other than that, the only other "non-hook" I can think of is a true circle hook. The point is inverted in towards the shank, so it's hard to catch yourself. And fishing with circles is easy for kids, as you don't even have to set the hook. It sets itself.

Or go way back in history:

One of man's earliest tools was the predecessor of the fishhook, a gorge: a piece of wood, bone, or stone an inch or so in length, pointed at both ends and secured off-center to the line. The gorge was covered with some kind of bait. When a fish swallowed the gorge, a pull on the line wedged it across the gullet of the fish, which could then be pulled in.

Why not just show her what it is, let her touch it with your help and tell her it can hurt her. I showed my daughter "fishy boo-boo's" when she was 2. She likes to hang out in the shop with Dad while I make flys and bucktails, and I like having her there. So I made sure she understood what she was dealing with. She now knows how to handle a hook, she's very careful, and we've never had an incident. She even surf fishes with me now as well as from the boat. Just teach her, they listen - especially when they know it's something you enjoy and can share in.
