I think those items are pretty much priced the same everywhere. If you are buying on line, I would consider sites/stores that offer free or actual cost shipping. For example, whitewater fies in southern new jersey, is on the internet and has free domestic shipping. Other shops, such as Bears Den charge actual shipping cost. Other shops have flat rate shipping, like $5, Still other shops base shipping on the amount of the order.

I need bucktails, Krystal Flash and white saddle hackle. any ideas where to get cheap stuff.[/quote

I would caution you on " cheap stuff ". Good stuff cheap is another thing. I have no idea what you are tying, but there are a lot of lousy bucktails out there. Krystal flash is one of my pet peeves. The quantity went down, and the price went up.

Call the Saltwater edge( barn advertiser) and tell them what you are looking for in tails and ask if they would habd select for you. every once in a while they post on here that they got nice long bucktails for streamers..

Krystal flash is going to cost you the same wherever you go

Im using the bucktails for jigs and teasers for my spinning gear and the hackle im making sand eels for my fly gear and might use the eels for teasers as well...not sure yet.

The black fly is my eel made with 8 hackle feathers, 4 on each side. 3 teasers or streamers made with bucktail and the jig. I would like to find some flash for the jig and teasers.

didnt mean cheap...inexpensive.

Had to do it. Couple points, I think it was Pete that said, don't buy cheap. Your flies will suffer for it. Very, very true. That goes for ALL natural materials. Hackles, ostrich, spinning deer, bucktails.......everything. There are of course times where you can't hand select but when you can, do it. Particularly on bucktails. Selection is everything. Length of fibers is one thing, the quality and quality of the correct fibers is even more important.

You all know, I tie a lot of flies. I sell flies, I fish alot and use alot of flies. I give away tons and tons of flies. My tying for Umpqua requires me to tie, litteraly, hundreds of samples. That being said, you can reduce your material costs by simply being more judicious with the materials you do tie with. I've taught tying classes and tied with many people. I've seen far too many guys that honestly waste 20-30 % of their materials. Particularly in the area of flash. Tying as much as I do, frugality is essential.

For those who need/want ostrich, I use www.thefeatherstore.com , great selection, great quality and much less expensive than purchasing at a shop or on line supplier.

Thanks for the info on the Ostrich. I will be needing a lot of it. Orvis wants to buy the rights to my Choggie popper. They like the originality of it being a gurgler

Like I said, call the Saltwater edge in Newport RI, and ask them what they have, and will they hand select for you. I have seen some nice tails in there.

Craig the Lurker and I spend a few days every June up in R.I. jumpin around rocks in your backyard... and a trip to Saltwater Edge is always a part or the program.

I am very comfortable saying that they have the best quality bucktails I have seen in a store and the rest of their tying supplies are of equal quality. I spend a good half hour just sifting through their tails picking out mine for the year.... great flyshop with a crazy selection of cool plugs as well for the surf.
